Travel Insurance for Fiji Honeymoon?

Hi everyone,

My fiance and I just booked our honeymoon in July to Fiji. We're coming from the New York City area and spending 3 nights on a blue lagoon cruise, and then 6 nights at Matangi. Travel insurance is about 225 dollars. Do you think it's worth it to get? Have other honeymooners to Fiji out there had it?? Thanks for any and all advice-
Jason

You might not have heard the saying "if you can't afford travel insurance, you can't afford to travel". Very true it is, in my opinion. Anything could happen (and hopefully nothing bad will) but you just don't know. I'd get it.
Kay

Hi Jason
I totally agree with Kay. In my former life in the travel industry we would not take clients on group travel without adequate travel insurance. There is always a risk! I had two years in a row without a claim from my annual group and then is year 3 had three people that had to be flown home with skiing injuries.

However I do think that you are paying FAR TOO MUCH for a 9 day cover. This year for full cover for myself and my wife for 12 days in the Yasawas (Blue lagoon) I paid round $US50. I purchased the cover on line from a NZ based international insurer. The previous year I paid only $US36.

Shop around.

Kerry

Definitely get it. Imagine the expense if you get sick or hurt and have to be sent home on a stretcher (and needed 5 seats). Or if someone close to you passes away right before this and you end up postponing your wedding and honeymoon. Some companies now cover the cost of your trip if a terrorist attack occurs and you do not want to travel (of course there are restrictions). I don't mean to be a downer, but there are so many things that could go wrong. They will also help if you lose your luggage or passport. I just used Travel Guard and it was $179 for a 14 day trip to Australia from the US. You can put your trip info into their web site (cost of trip and length) and it will show you the cost.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your replies, appreciate them. To the person who said they had insurance through a new zealand company, do you mind telling me what the name of the company is? Do they have a website? Thanks-Jason

Hi Jason

I can understand that youand your fiancee are eagerly awaiting a great honeymoon. But the very best protection is to make certain that it is insured. I would advise that you check for insurance stateside as it will cover your flights while on your honeymoon and your hotels and then your return flights. If something occurs early on (and things can occur - a broken ankle - the flu - a cancelled flight that causes you to miss the second leg of your flight, then the insurance covers you. If one of you becomes ill outside this country and needs a hospital - the insurance covers you. All the way through until you safely arrive at your front door at honeymoon's end. It's a lot easier to say "Our honeymoon could have been ruined." When we travelled to Australia and toured around that country we had insurance for our flights and hospitalization too. The cost was under $150 pp. It was well worth it.

Hope you have a glorious wedding and a long, happy life together!!

Try www.travelsecure.com. We have always had good luck with them. As a matter of fact, a time we were in Fiji we were on an island with an approaching cyclone and all boat traffic was stopped. Our flight home was that evening and the only chance we had of making it was to helicopter off the island. CSA actually paid for the helicopter flight. So, you just never know what may happen although at the time you will be there it is not cyclone season.
