Budget hotels in Toronto/Montreal

I have a free roundtrip ticket on Air Canada that I need to use before years end so I've decided to visit Canada for the 1st time. I'm on a budget so would like to know of a really budget hotel for a weekend december 11-13. I'm thinking of going to Toronto or Montreal and not really sure which city but leaning towards Toronto. Also is there public transportation for Pearson Airport to downtown Toronto?

Come to Toronto.

There is public transportation (bus down Dixon Road to Lawrence subway station). An alternative is to take the airport bus to a major hotel. Regarding hotels, if you are in the US, check out priceline - you may score a 4 star hotel at two star rates.

One hotel to check out is the Holiday Inn Select on Bloor street. It's in the U of T area of town, close to Yorkville (Toronto's "fifth avenue" area) and the St. George subway stop.

To plan your stay, check out web sites such as Now magazine
http://www.nowtoronto.com/issues/2005-11-24/index.php and Toronto.com

People do seem to come up with real baragins on Priceline.

If you approach hotels more conventionally, the two lowest price but still nice downtown hotels are the Hotel Victoria on Yonge Street, south of King Street, and the Strathcona Hotel, on York Street, just north of Front Street.

Both are well located, near tourist things, close to restaurants in many price ranges,....

the Strathcona is across the street fromt he Fairmont Royal York, one of the great hotels in Canada. And it is beside the (highway-style) bus stop from the airpot to downtown. Around $15.

As a Montrealer, I say come to Montreal. It's cheaper than Toronto, we have better restaurants, good shopping and a great nightlife. But I'm not biased or anything Montreal has many beautiful and interesting places to visit and a lot of soul. You don't need to speak French to get by here. You will surely be able to find a well-priced budget hotel with a bit of searching on various travel websites.

On the contrary, Toronto has better restaurants in a widest range of cuisines and price points.

I would try hotels.com, especially since your trip is a bit last-minute. I have stayed in 4-star hotels in London through them several times, usually for around $70 (US) a night. And of course the not-four-star ones were even cheaper.

Toronto *is* expensive, though! And there is 15% sales tax (depending on what you buy, you might be able to get something back when you leave), which is an important factor in a budget.

Check here http://www.bedandbreakfast.com/toronto-ontario.html

Some of them seem reasonable - choose a couple and see what they offer in the off-season - come back to the list and someone who lives here can tell you about the area it's in.
