I'm not sure exactly what your question is.
A US passport is the best proof of US citizenship there is--were you hoping to avoid taking your passports for some reason???

HI! I plan to use passport, the travel article seemed to infer additonal requirement, probably just the Times error.

The whole situation is very confusing. the LA Times story was saying that for people who don't have passports (and that is a growing number with the current backlog) the US has a temporary policy of not requiring a passport to get back to the US for people who have applications pending and can prove this with a status report from the state Dept web site. These same people (w/o passports) do have to satisfy the Canadian govt which they can do with either a passport or a birth certificate. the original info on the
"Temporary Travel Flexibility for U.S. Citizens with Pending Passport Applications" did not make it clear that the proof of pending US passport application would not satisfy Canadian (or Mexican) officials.

IF you have passports you are ok with both the US and the Canadian officials.

Must be! Or the the confusion that since some people haven't gotten their passports in time, The US is allowing people who have a printout proving that they applied for a pasport to use that proof along with a birth certificate to reenter the US without a passport (until September, I think)

Your passpoprts are all that are required, but if you have a criminal record, you've had it.
