A friend and I are contemplating a trip to New Brunswick in mid-October and are looking for inexpensive lodging in or around Saint Stephen, Saint John, and/or Fredericton. We would need rooms with 2 beds.

We are hoping for rates under $100, and under $75 would be ideal. Mom & Pop motels would be fine - B&B's are less likely to have the room types we need, I would guess. Rooms do not have to be fancy, but something a tad nicer than Motel 6 would be welcome.

Do such places exist?

Thanks for any help you can give, especially places you have stayed or heard about recently.

Would the Fundy National Park/Alma area work for you? It's about 1&1/2 hours from Saint John, further from your other choices, but this area is also a major attraction in itself and an easy day-trip to Hopewell Rocks. I'm thinking of the Fundy Highland Inn and Chalets - have not stayed in the them, but the chalets look quite cute, seem to get good reviews and the fall prices are in your range. http://www.fundyhighlandchalets.com/eng/chalets.htm
How much time are you spending in NB, what your specific interests and is this stay part of a tour of the Province or of Atlantic Canada?

We would be coming up from Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park in Maine, USA. It looks like Saint Stephen is about 2.5 hours, Saint John and Fredericton are about 4 hours, and Alma is about 5.5 hours from Bar Harbor, all of which are doable. But we would need to return to Boston, so Alma (at 8.5 hours from Boston) might be pushing things a little.

Main interests are scenery (Alma would be great for that), history, and antiques - any or all of the above. We probably would just have 2 or at most 3 days for NB before we would have to head south again. My friend really wants to go to Halifax, but I think it is too far from Boston for the time we have.

My friend has the limiting schedule, but I will check and see if Alma would fit with it.

Near St. Stephen - Saint Andrews is more of a destination/resort town in a scenic setting. It's been a few years since I stayed there and my visits have been in high season with prices above your budget, but there are several motels in town. http://www.standrewsbythesea.ca/visit/

If Alma is a possibility, you might also consider Moncton as an alternative. It's a pleasant enough town/small city although not right on the ocean however is fairly well situated for various daytrips including to Alma, Hopewell Rocks, even possibly to Charlottetown PEI, or Parrsboro NS if you don't mind a longer day-drive. There would be a wide assortment of accommodations there.

We just returned from the area(s) you are asking about. Maybe prices will be lower in October, I do not know, however we didn't find motels under $100.00.Must say, we didn't search out to many Mom & Pop places. Didn't see that many of them, although I am sure they're around. Beautiful area, enjoy your trip.

You will be hard pressed to find anything under $100 for hotels.

I was thinking about you cranachin and wondered if you had gone yet. The weather has ranged from crap to spectac and I hope you manage to hit the best weather. Im afraid the heavy rain and winds last week may have affected the leaves and fall colour.

Thanks, irecommend! Actually, we had to cancel the trip (I prefer to think of it as postpone!). My schedule and my friend's just wouldn't mesh well enough to allow the time needed.

But I do have some leads now in case we decide to go next fall.
