Lunch in Montreal

We(parents and 2 kids,11 and 14)will be in Montreal just for the day. We plan to walk around the Old City (Le Vieux Montreal?) and are looking for suggestions of where to eat lunch. We would like someplace we can sit down and eat as opposed to a deli or market.

Try Steak-frites St-Paul, on St-Paul St., east of St-Laurent. Good food, not expensive, nice decor.

We often used to take our kids to Giorgio on St. Laurent in Vieux Montréal. Although it's a chain, this branch is located in an historic building, and the food, while basic Italian, was always good. I haven't been there in some years, but the kids certainly enjoyed it.

If Steak-Frites is the same place I think it is, on a south-west corner, on a narrow street, it's an excellent place. It's right in the Old Montreal neighborhood, which is good, and it is sort of fancy, which will make it memorable for the kids, and not so fancy that it will be stifling.

Don't have dessert.

For this, walk down a blcok towards the river, on the wide street that faces the parkland, and get a beaver tail from the sales-window overlooking the street.

You haven't mentioned when you're going, but Jardin Nelson is awesome, though, they're only open in the nicer weather.

Beaver Tails are pieces of dough, shaped like a beaver tail, then deep fried and served with a variety of toppings. My favourite is the Killaloe Sunrise--cinnamon, sugar and lemonjuice.

Although it's probably a very old recipe, Beaver Tails under that name were first sold in Ottawa, about 25 years ago. Now you can get them all over. In Montréal, look for signs that say "Queues de Castor"

Check out their website at http://www.beavertailsinc.com/product.html
