Montreal/Quebec City via Train

Just took the train last week from Montreal to Quebec City and back. I opted for second class at $75CAD round trip. From what I could tell, they let them( first class)on the train first and might have fed them something, I wasn't really watching. We all rode together in the same car, no different seats or anything! For the difference in price, you could purchase a very nice picnic to bring on the train with you and still have cash for a nice dinner out! Peg

Take a look at the Via Rail site:
http://www.viarail.ca/en.index.html

for train schedules/prices/time it takes/services available on each train etc.

Also, don't know if it is still the case, but I know last year that if you booked and paid a week or more in advance, then there was a substantial discount in the price. Maybe you can travel first class for the same price as second.

Anne in sunny Australia (land of the Olympics)

First Class is always nice, but for a short trip hardly worth it. With FC you do get reserved seats, free meals and beverages (inc. alcoholic ones), use of FC lounge before boarding and there is more room (I think you can also plug in your laptop). Coach has no reserved seats and slightly less room, but thre is a cart from which you can buy snacks and beverages - though personally I'd be inclined to buy my drinks and take a picnic!

Laurel:

A day trip to Quebec City??!! Do yourself a favour and go for about three days at least. We found Montreal a delightful city, but a big city all the same - now Quebec City is a different story - quaint, interesting and just wonderful. The B & B Lodgings are fantastic and the food is great.

Beryl (sunny Western Australia)

Can someone tell me how to book (phone number or Web address) the train from Montreal to Quebec City? I was in Montreal 2 weeks ago for the first time and had a FABULOUS time, stayed in Old Montreal. Now, we'd like to see Quebec City? What is the most romantic place to stay in Quebec City??

I just called viarail to make round-trip reservations for my husband and myself from Montreal to QuebecCity on Dec. 20- Dec. 27. I was informed that we can take a carry-on bag each, that there is no baggage car, a few overhead racks available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Is this for real? Should we take a bus? Rent a car? I've already made reservations to stay at the Queen Elizabeth in Montreal because it is above the train station. I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks, Lynn

HI

Having seen previous VIA passengers, I suspect that you will be let on the train with whatever you and your husband are personally able to carry on. If you're bringing more than that on a Montreal/Quebec City trip...I'm afraid you may wish to look into other options.

DAN

Lynn, When I traveled VIA Rail last summer (Montreal-Quebec) everyone stowed their bags at the front of the car as you boarded(not overhead). I wheeled my suitcase on, rolled it into the area for storage, and retrieved it when we arrived in Quebec City. Never had to hoist it over my head. It really is painless, you will enjoy the trip!!
