Montreal Transportation

I am thinking about taking my mom to Montreal for a few days as a mother/daughter trip this fall. I've real a lot about accomodations on this board, but not so much about getting around. Do we need to rent a car at the airport, or can we take a taxi into town and then use public transportation and taxis during our stay? I don't really want to rent a car if I don't have to. My driving makes my mother nervous enough in our home town much less another country. Also, is the airport far outside of town?

You do not need a car to visit Montreal. Taxi from airport to downtown is C$ 29 flat fee.
In the city itself, public transportation is very good. The metro (subway) and bus system cab get you just about anywhere. You can get a tourist pass at any metro station.

If you can, go to Quebec City instead. We visited Quebec City and Montreal in August 2002. Quebec was cleaner, safer, more attractive and easier to get around. The best way is on foot. It is a beautiful city.

Frank

I have been thinking about Quebec City as well, but what about getting there? Don't you need to fly to Montreal and then rent a car and drive there? Is it a far drive?

Last month five of our family was in Montreal and took the train to Quebec City for a couple of days. It went very well. The train station in Montreal is close to the Metro (subway).

The surprise for us was how hilly Quebec City was. We was not expecting that.

Both Montreal and Quebec City are wonderful cities to visit. Enjoy!
