Nova Scotia travel advice for family trip?

I would be very grateful for advice as we plan a family trip to Nova Scotia in late June. I have perused older threads and done extensive reading, but am still having a hard time drawing up an itinerary.

We are a family of 5 (kids 12, 10, and 7) who will fly in to Halifax for one week. We like museums, good food, light hikes, and nice scenery.

We plan to spend about three days exploring Halifax (Pier21, Maritime Museum, Harbour hopper tour, day trip Peggy’s Cove, Art Gallery of NS, etc).

After Halifax, we thought of venturing farther on the southern shore via rental car to spend a few nights elsewhere and see Lunenburg and possibly do the Salty Dog Tour. But all the resort options (White Point, Oak Island, Quarterdeck) seem to have a lot of negative recent reviews. My impression is that places have gone downhill during COVID. Is there a good place to stay, or is it better to just stay in Halifax and do day trips? Or alternatively, should we venture to another part of Nova Scotia (Cape Breton?) for the last three days of the trip?

I really appreciate any advice!
