Road Trip to Calgary

Please I need advice, I want to take a road trip with my wife and 3 children ages between 12-16. I live in Winnipeg and wants to travel between August 28 to September 1. I am thinking of driving from Calgary to Banff to Lake Louise and Jasper then back to Calgary then home to Winnipeg. Please what is the best way to plan my route, where to stay and what to do.

Is Aug 28 - Sept 1 for the entire trip or only for the Calgary round trip part? Winnipeg to Calgary is 13+ hrs without any stops or delays - that's basically two days there and two days back - which would take up four of your five your days. That doesn't make much sense. If you have four days in the area, I would go directly to Canmore or Banff on the 28th and stay there the nights of 28th, 29th and 30th. Then head to Jasper, and stay there the night of the 31st. Then head home via Edmonton or Calgary.

But have you booked accommodation yet?

If not, I would start looking ASAP and confirm that you have accommodation before committing to any road trip plans. The Canadian Rockies are extremely busy this summer - and people have reporting difficulty in finding accommodation for quite some time, especially in Jasper. Unfortunately you are leaving very, very late to find a place.

And accommodation is not cheap - an everage hotel room runs about $250, cheaper for PHAs/B&Bs. And now you may find that the remaining options are the more expensive ones... With 5 people, none of whom are small kids, you are almost certainly going to need two rooms or a suite.

My advice would be to start looking ASAP as availability will likely dictate whether the trip is possible, and if so, your itinerary.

For Jasper, PHAs may be the most cost effective way but you will need to call or e-mail each separately (www.stayinjasper.com). For Banff and Lake Louise, expect around $250 for an average hotel room - all accommodations will be listed at www.banfflakelouise.com. Canmore is not far from Banff and a good alternative if nothing matches your needs in Banff or Lake Louise.

The four days does not include the travel days I should have mentioned. Am hoping to drive it in a day. I have never been to Calgary before so am hoping to at least spend a day in Calgary and then drive to Banff Lake Louise and Jasper. Am thinking spending a day in Banff will be okay am not so much an outdoor person but enjoy great sight seeing. Then maybe spilt another day between Jasper and Lake Louise and then return to Calgary to drive home. Does this makes sense please.
