We have approx. 7 days to travel to Banff and wondered if anyone thought it it would be
a good idea to travel via Kamloops, Salmon Arm and Jasper before arriving at Banff?? Travelling mid May, thanks in advance

Are you going back to Vancouver after Banff?
I never drove it but I have taken the ViaRail Canadian several times to Jasper. Jasper and Banff are a lot more scenic than Kamloops.

on one trip we stationed ourselves in vancouver (early june) for a couple of days and did a day trip to whistler- we left at 10:30am

went by furry dreek and squarmish with a quick stop at shannon falls ( pretty as!)..had brunch at Klaharmie restaurant with a view of the falls ( great meal)..we stopped at Brandywine falls too which are very beautiful ..

by 230 we were in whistler
caught the chair-lift ( it was so cold and we werent all that appropriately dressed - my friend was in shorts!)

we gotback to whistler at 930 after having hot cider and doing some souvenir shopping in the whistler village and stopping for pics at Howe Sound ( Brittania Beach)

The next day we left for banff allowing two days travel. We left at 9am stopped at Fraser river ( Hope Slide was the was the scene of a minor earthquake in 1965 and the lake was covered)
Headed towards Princetonand saw deer near Manning Park
by 130 we were in Hedley and stopped for a peek at the trading post store before driving to Osoyoos where we had a walk round the lake and took pics from the lookout;passed Castlegar at 7pm and then bedded down for the night in Nelson ( the Hume Hotel -really good value we thought -fab dining room and good meals)
in the morning we had a look round Nelson, leaving at 11:15 via Salmo- we were advised by locals to take the southern route to Banff so we enetered Kootenay Country - Burnt Flat and Creston stopping at Cranbrook at 1:50 for a coffee and snacks
There were lovely views to be had on the way to Fort Steele...we stopped at Skookumchuck ( v.small town) and took pics of the mountains
Further on we came across gorgeous Lake Columbia and then to my delight saw some hoodoos- the geological formations that i saw on the internet when planning the trip- really like nothing ive ever seen before and so it was very special!
By 4:20 we were in Radium Springs- went to the info centre and were warned not to go to Olive Lake because of bear sightings..we walked around the hot springs but didnt stay long - theres a big swimming pool that is heated by the springs but we pressed on - left Radium by 5:15 and headed to Redwall Fault ( still part of the Kootenay National Park)
-we had paid for a $32 park pass by the way
We stopped at Floe Creek - so pretty and there were warnings of more bears about so we took care not to go to far from the car
By 6:40 we had passed Numa Falls and it was raining hard ( weather can be so changeable!)
This area was so lovely..somethin so different from oz waterways and the colour of the river water was amazing- pale green
We reached the border of British Columbia and Alberta by 7pm and visited the Continental Divide
6km from Banff there was lovely viewing point - we could see Sundance Range Mt howard Cascade Mountain and Sulphure mt

7:39 and we were in Banff a delightful looking village..
we had plenty of daylight left but still found some difficulty finding our accommodation at the Inns of Banff- about a half hour walk into town
we dined at the Balkans Restaurant and settled in for our time in this gorgeous part of the world

Ok..so thats what is possible in two days time..we always pack it in and i am a mad/bad lol photographer so there are lots of little stops...myabe this will help you plan part of your return journey or you might do what we did and dip down through USA and then back to Vancouver
