My wife and I went to Victoria on the high speed ferry that departed from Seattle. The ferry was so fast that the windows got all fogged up and we had to go up top to see anything. Very windy on top but saved a great deal of time. Only regret was not stopping at the San Juan Islands - do so if you possibly can.

We stayed at the Harbourside Hotel (?) and it was terrific. Victoria was absolutely beautiful, but the food was not great. Our best meals were at breakfast. There is a beautiful old English Inn that sits on the cliff - Sorry but I cannot remember the name. You have to walk to it along the water and it was just great to do that every morning.

Go to the gardens - beautiful

Just keep away from Traveller's Inns - they take no care with your reservation and treat people like sh.. if something goes wrong. They left a lasting nasty taste in my mouth about the whole of Victoria.
There is not a whole lot to see there actually except for the gardens and if you have been to other places in the world they are pretty comparable.

I would recommend staying somewhere on the harbour, it is just lovely. And contrary to what some others say, there are excellent bed and breakfasts that serve superb meals for a moderate price. Check out the Royal Scot Hotel or the Ocean Pointe. Actually any hotel along the harbor (except the Empress - very overpriced for what you get). If it isn't a convention weekend, you could perhaps wing it and get a better price. I have been there and gotten a suite next to the parliament buildings (2 bdrms., 2 baths) for $135Cdn but I took my chances as I have relatives there so if worse came to worse, I could sleep on their floor. Try to go to Sooke, visit Royal Roads University - the main building is unbelievable. It was originally built by the first Premier of BC and they will allow you to look around. The grounds are also spectacular. And Sooke has an ambiance of its own. Including the oldest pub on Van. Is. I think it is called 7 mile pub. If you have a car, drive a bit north of Sooke along the ocean. It is wonderful. There is much more to see and do in Vic. than just the gardens. It is one of my favorite cities.
