A Packing Dilema - pants or shorts

We are visiting Harbour Island this coming week and have never visited this part of the Caribbean. We've heard the Bahamas is more "proper" in dress than some other islands but from no one that's actually been there.

Can my husband wear nice dress shorts with a collared shirt? Or does he need to wear slacks every night for dinner?

I don't know where we are dining or I would mention that to help you out. Any dining suggestions, by the way?

Thanks!
Sheila

Just to be safe I would suggest packing a couple pairs of Dockers. In every resort we have stayed in in the Caribbean, all the better restaurants require slacks and collared shirts. Better safe than sorry.

I agree with Lisa's response 100%.

My husband wears pants to dinner at all but the most casual of places in the Caribbean.

Pants will be fine, but you don't have to worry. Shorts are also fine there. I don't think Paul even brings long pants in the summer months.

Pink Sands is the most upscale restaurant on island, so he might want to wear pants there.

Runaway Hill and Romora Bay are the best restaurants on island and nice shorts are fine there. There is one seating at 8pm, and the food at both resorts is wonderful.

Where are you staying on island?

Hope this helps, have a GREAT time, I am just a bit green.

Please say HI!!! to everyone there for me, and let me know if you need any more info, and I will give you some names of people to look for.

Be sure to eat lunch ( or verrrry casual dinner) at Angela's Starfish. And Ma Ruby (is she still around?) makes the Cheeseburger in Paradise that JBuffett supposedly wrote about (although a number of eateries like to make that claim).

Actually, in November 1999, Jimmy Buffet himself went to St. Barts & performed a long FREE concert at Le Select -- that bar he said, repeatedly, is where he sat when he wrote Cheeseburger in Paradise. I was there; this is not second-hand. (50th anniversary of Le Select).

Now that I think about it, what he said was that Le Select has the rights to it & gets to say that they're the place. (He used to live in St Barts). It was a GREAT concert -- the entire island (& then some).

MaryD, that is a great story! A toast of the margarita to you - you have great timing or you must be a JB insider to have caught that show!

mm, I suppose you're baiting here, but have you ever even been to the OUT islands of the Bahamas? That happens to be what we're discussing here. I don't think you'd post that statement if you had an inkling how wonderful they are...

Lisa and Joan,

Have you lost your sense(s) of humor? I guess this Harald charactor has got you guys all in a froth.

I guess the words "icky-ness" and the smilie face did not register.

The Bahamas are wonderful and filled with hard working, honest and friendly people. Better?

Please understand that Harrald has been on this site for several years now harrassing all of us. He used to send us hundreds of viruses to our home computer. He did some research and posted my name, address and phone number to harrass me on this site. His "websites" people have reported picking up viruses by visiting his sites, I can go on and on,,,but basically he is the reason that Fodors went to a registration on this board, and unfortunately he still isn't taking the hint. He has been banned now from this site for his constant drivel, personal attacks, and outright lies, one of these days he will go away, we can all hope.

Re: Harald

I had no idea. Hating a place is one thing but spreading virus' or harrasing someone is something else.

Harrald had a business deal go bad quite a few years ago and has been trying to take it out on Bahamas tourism on this and several other boards ever since. The Bahamas tourism website shut down it's message board because of Harrald. He is more than a pest, and has been banned from this and several other sites time and time again. I have never seen a positive thread that he has started or added to, and my guess is that he has never been anywhere in the carribean, so has nothing positive to add to the site. It's a shame all his energy is turned to hatred.

Thanks wantsomesun.

I have been a long-time poster, and have seen the "many faces of Harrald." Over the years I have wondered what would make someone angry anough to put so much time, emotion and energy into the constant Bahamas-bashing that he engages in.

I thought maybe he was married to someone from the Bahamas who left him, or was incarcerated there, or was in the tourism buisness on another island.

I managed to come up with all kinds of scenarios over the years for why he was so vociferous with his postings.

You have now provided the answer.

Harrald, honey... it's time to get over it and move on with your life. This is not good for you, nor is it constructive for the fodors.com readers.
