Anyone been to Cancun recently ?

I was just getting ready to call Marriott to book the JW in Cancun but I understand that is is still closed due to the Hurricane - how is the rest of Cancun ?

Lots of damage to Cancun due to Wilma. Beach there is in bad shape.

You might look into Playa del Carmen.

Very little (if any) damage there and a very up and coming and FUN town. It's about 45 min. south of Cancun.

We've been many times and love it. Many more good restaurants than Cancun, and lots of fun nightclubs and things to do in the area. Amazing beach.

Check out this website:

locogringo.com

I've booked through them several times and been very pleased.

or playa.info

Lots of great PDC info.

Once you go to Playa, you'll be much less likely to return to Cancun, I'd bet!

We usually go to Cancun every year (except last year as we decided on cayman). We were going to go back to Cancun this year but since Wilma hit, the Sheraton we usually stay at sustained so much damage, they tore it down and are rebuilding. We decided to go to T&C instead and give Cancun time to rebuild itself a little.

The JW is supposed to re-open in May. There are some wonderful photos of the beach restoration over at the Cancun forum on tripadvisor.com. The beach now looks awesome, huge !
If I were booking for anytime after June this year, I'd go.

Thanks guys !! I have been to Playa Del Carmen but it's been about 30 years since I've been to Cancun and were looking forward to see how it has changed and to go back to the places I had gone - hopefully they are still there.

I hadn't heard the Sheraton was so damaged they have torn it down and are rebuilding. We stayed there almost 21 years ago for the first time on our honeymoon and again about six years ago with our daughter. Cancun was our favorite until we found PDC. Does anyone know which of the two Sheraton towers they tore down (or both)?. Glad they are rebuilding.

I believe they tore down the whole thing. Rumor was they were turning it into timeshare (not sure though). I saw a picture of it demolished - didn't look like anything was left standing. I'm just wondering what happened to all the iguanna's that lived on that property.
