Are screened porches necessary in GC?

We hope to go to Grand Cayman in late Feb/early March and wonder if it is necessary to have the screened porch/balcony at that time (or any time, for that matter). Are bugs a big problem there? Would the screens be a deciding factor in your choice of a condo?
thanks!
Sally

We were in GC this summer and stayed at Aqua Bay condos with a screened in porch. Although it was very nice, we didn't feel it absolutely necessary. We also stayed at the Westin for a few nights and didn't miss the screen when sitting outside. We've only been to GC in the summer, but never had major problems with bugs.

We stayed at Villas of the Galleon in December. We had a great patio (not screened) and we never felt that we needed one. I don't recall any bugs at all. I prefer not to have a screnned in patio/porch because I like the unobstructed view and being able to just walk a few steps and be on the beach. We spent a lot of time just sitting on the beach loungers in the evening too...

WE also stayed at the Villas of The Galleon in June, 2004. Never had a mosquito problem at all.

I have to disagree with the other posters on this one. I've been vacationing in Grand Cayman since 1974 and would never stay in a place without a screened porch.

It very well may depend on the time of year. In Feb., I did not find them a problem and my son always gets bitten up.

We went in May, and I didn't get a single bite, nor did we see any mosquitos.

Been twice in Dec & both times stayed in a condo on 7 Mile Beach with a screened porch but we never noticed any bugs or mosquitos, even sitting out on beach at sunset.
BUT, in 2 wks (mid-Sept) we're going to stay in TS unit without screens on East End, so I'll let you know how that is.

I've been to Grand Cayman in May and got really bit up one night from those nasty "no-see-ums" ... probably at dusk when we were sitting outside eating and I didn't put any bug repellent on my legs. Therefore, I would recommend a screened balcony, more for the noseeums ... I don't recall a problem with mosquitos.

In case anyone needs to know for future reference, I went to GC in August 2004, and did have some problems with mosquitoes . . . and was grateful for the screened porch.

I live in the northeast U.S. The mosquitoes in GC are nothing like they are up here. At least where we stayed in GC, there weren't nearly as many, but they did exist. They also look a little different, smaller and black.

By the way, the only place where the mosquitoes were an ENORMOUS problem was at the Queen Elizabeth Botanical Gardens. At least in August, they are like a plague there equal to Biblical proportions!! It's a pretty place, but bring the bugspray if you go!
