Been to Barbados and St. Lucia, where to next?
Loved them both and would be very tempted to return to either one but, have an urge to explore other possibilities for a week in April. Travelling with our two adult kids (19&21). In thinking what we like in an island, have decided we love lush as opposed to arrid, snorkelling is a must, and it has to have direct flights from Toronto (I know this fact will limit our choices). We tend to also like smaller resorts with character that offer great food and watersport activities (ie. Windjammer Landing). So, a challenge to all you Fodorites for some suggestions if you know of anything that might suit would be greatly appreciated. As always, thanks a bunch!

What about the British Virgin Islands? You could take a direct flight to St. Thomas (USVI) and then take a ferry over to Tortola. While not as lush or mountainous as St. Lucia, the terrain is more varied than Barbados; it offers great snorkeling and beautiful beaches, and it's easy to do daytrips from one to the others. (For that matter, St. John would also work for the lush, beach & snorkeling factors, but the BVI might offer more of the Caribbean feel you're looking for.)
If you enjoy sailing at all, you should check out Bitter End Yacht Club on Virgin Gorda. On the more upscale end of things on same island would be Little Dix or Biras Creek. There are lots of villas available, too.
I've personally been looking at Long Bay Resort and the Sugarmill Hotel on Tortola for a vacation next year. Try checking out www.bvi-welcome.com for lots of info.

ejcrowe, you are so full of good information. Now I know where to start. For some reason I didn't realize you could fly direct to St. Thomas from T.O. so will get busy checking places out from there - just didn't want to spend half our time travelling. Thanks so much! P.S How's your doggie and did you try the recipe for the Bee Sting?

Yes ejcrowe has great info. I 2nd the BVI recommendations, or perhaps St. John USVI. You might also consider Tobago or Nevis although fits lush but Nevis doesn't have alot of great snorkeling but truly is a great island and same with Bequia. I know not your prerequisite for lush but snorkeling is just fantastic on Bonaire. I'm a lush island traveler typically but bite it for the water sometimes. Happy travels.

Thanks, folks. Sadly, we had to euthanize our friend the day after Thanksgiving. Most of his body was semi-paralyzed from a crushed disk and he went into renal failure from the steroids we put him on. I have a wonderful boss who sent me home the day after T-giving so I could spend it with him curled up next to the doggie bed. It was a sad, sad moment and those of you who've been through it know it's the worse decision to have to make. To play both God and executioner. But on the other hand, it's also the last favor we can grant a dear friend. Our remaining pup is lonely and subdued and my husband and I are bending over backwards to make sure he's not left alone in the house more than a couple of hours. Even one of our cats seems a bit lost in the face of his absence.
Now back to the topic...starfish, I didn't actually check to see that there are direct flights between Toronto and St. Thomas, but I can't imagine that there wouldn't be. My husband and I honeymooned in the BVI last year and have been dreaming of going back. I think we'll take a short trip there next summer with his granddaughter for her 13th birthday. We just got back from Nevis a couple of weeks ago and it was wonderful, but it does lack direct flights from Toronto and good snorkeling. I think BVI would be perfect for you and I can't wait to hear back from you as you begin your planning and further posting. Heck, if I can't be planning a trip of my own, I love to hear the details of other folks' trips!

Thank you Traveler863 for your info. and ejcrowe too (so sorry to hear your sad news - I have been there so know exactly how you feel. You think you keep seeing them out of the corner of your eye but as they say, time does and will help, hope you all feel better soon). For our trip,I will probably put everything on hold until after the holidays - just too much going on right now and it's fun to have trip planning to look forward to. So, you will no doubt be hearing from me and I'll do some research and see what I can find. Thanks again to you both!
