Our trip to Tortola last year was great - and the visits to Jost were even better due to White Bay. We stayed at Tortola's Long Bay Beach Resort and enjoyed it...however, the water was less than calm and we ended up spending more time at the pool. We need advice on which side of Tortola is the very calmest and prettiest - like White Bay? Snorkeling off-beach is important to us and we do like a nice resort. Any great advice here?

Actually you'll find little to compare with White Bay, Jost on Tortola. If that is really what you are looking for why not head to Jost for your stay? Or as an option there are wonderful spots on Virgin Gorda like Mahoe Bay where there is good snorkeling. Mango Bay is on Mahoe and it's right on the beach. You could check out some of the private island resorts such as Guana and Peter Island too.

I second Mahoe Bay on Virgin Gorda-absolutely paradise. Our 10 month old at the time loved playing in the calm water and soft white sand. Here are my pix if you want to see for yourself the amazing beach there We’re headed to St. John/Jost Van Dyke this weekend so I’ll be able to better compare Mahoe Bay to those when I return.

Did you get to Smuggler's on Tortola? I think that's one of the prettiest and calmest beaches on that island, and it's just down the road from Long Bay. You can drive, cab or walk. Brewer's Bay is also usually pretty calm. Good snorkeling at both, but then no resort RIGHT there. Anegada has gorgeous and incredibly calm beaches - Cow Wreck in particular, and terrific snorkeling, but again no resort.

No major "resort" on Anegada (thakfully) but there's a variety of locally owned inns, guesthouses, villas and campgrounds

Kelly - looking forward to your comparison. St. John used to be my favorite but have found that Virgin Gorda captures the St. John as it used to be before the crowds and development since it has been "found."

My vote is for Cow Wreck or Loblolly on Anegada for calm water. Plus, often there won't be another soul around. No real resorts, though. But we've never seemed to mind. Jost Van Dyke may have more what you're looking for. Virgin Gorda too.

kellybeaches, would you mind sharing with us the name of the villa you rented on Virgin Gorda? It looks gorgeous. Also, was it much of a hill down to the beach?

It's literally on the beach, just steps from the pool. In my pictures if you see the one with the gate with the beach beyond it, that gate opens, you go down about 3 steps, and you're on the beach. You can also see the house set up from the link above. The most people we saw on that pristine beach at any time was about 5. It really is beautiful, and the villa was immaculate, and the service great. The big bbq outside was also a big plus, as we grilled almost every night. I'd highly recommend it. We went in on it with my in-laws and another couple, so the price worked out to be reasonable with splitting it 3 ways. If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask.

We stayed in Loblolly just a few steps above the beachfront - maybe a 100 yds. and not a hilly walk at all!
The villas are kept very nicely and the beach is wonderful. Only complaint is that the beachchairs are pretty uncomfotable! Was surprised that there wouldn't at least be the $20 ones! One group had them but not sure if they belonged to the villa or they were the owners. We too had my g'baby who was property introduced to Caribbean water at 8 months!

All are right...nothing compares to Jost's White Bay. I think we'll simply stay at The Perfect Pineapple and do some limin' with no worries for a few days. Life is short.
