Clothing optional in Dom. Rep???

My husband and I (professionals, late 30's, fairly conservative folks) will be going to Casa del Mar in Bayahibe next month. What is the story regarding topless or nude sunbathing there? I've read conflicting reports, some say it's not allowed, others say topless is ok in places. Anyone have an informed opinion?

Thanks.

I can't tell you about the particular resort you've chosen, but at others in the Dominican Republic, topless sunbathing is fairly common (mostly with European women). It's really up to the individual.

Speaking as one who loved there for a few years, Dominican's are a surprisingly conserative people in many ways, despite the surface appearance of sensuous dancing, earthy music, public prostitution in some areas and girls, even children, dressed in clothing we here might consider provocative.

The DR is a nation of some 8 million people, with a high percentage of sincere church-going people and serious morals. Still, the ways of a culture are not as simple as they appear to be. Some things we would never tolerate in the USA, are acceptable there, but the reverse is also true. And, some things are *almost* the same.

Totally nude bathing in the DR is virtually unknown. It almost certainly will get you arrested. Topless, if done on a public beach or even a hotel beach where the majority of the clients are local families, will cause problems.

Having said that, topless bathing on hotel beaches and around pools frequented by Europeans is not unusual. However, although Dominicans may tolerate topless around European resorts, they really don't like it on "their" beaches any more than the family folks along the Jersey Shore or Miami.

I'm not sure if your question implies that you are looking for a place where you can, or if you wish to avoid it. If you'll clarify your question I may be able to direct you an appropriate place.

Joe Harkins
Travel The Net
http://www.travelthe.net

Joe, thanks for your obviously well-informed, sensitive and thoughtful reply.

You could say I am timidly interested in trying topless sunbathing. What I mean is, if it's commonly done, in a fairly serious atmosphere (i.e., not like what I've read about some of the clothing optional resorts), and if I feel safe I _might_ want to give it a try, since it's not something I could do where I live. However, I would not like to either feel uncomfortable or make others feel that way. Do I make any sense?

Thanks again for your response. I've already bought a two piece bathing suit just in case!!

Therese

Hi Therese,

My husband and I returned from Casa del Mar on July 4. This resort is frequented by a lot of Europeans and yes, there were some european women who were sunbathing topless. There were quite a few Canadians there who, including ourselves, were uncomfortable around these women. But to each their own. I agree with Joe who says that the Dominicans themselves were quite conservative. This resort had a lot of guests from the Dominican itself and they were not particularly fond of any such exhibitionism. In case you wish to try it, in this resort you will not be hte only topless sunbather. topless or not, enjoy the gorgeous beach and the fabulous pool.

Hi Claudia!

We have been to Casa del Mar recently and had a wonderful time. I have an extensive message on this resort that I had sent to some one else via email. I'm sure I still have a copy of that message. I will send you a copy of the same. I hope it is OK to send an email to you directly.

Ciao,
Sherry
