Considering Isle de France for honeymoon
We're considering the Isle de France hotel on St. Barthelemy for a honeymoon destination in October and wondered if anyone had comments. We'd like to find a place that is romantic, offers some activities (but not too many!), has meal choices, and is close enough to a town that we can go into town if we choose to. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Won't affect your plans one way or the other I'm sure, but we were at another Caribbean resort last week with the owners of Isle de France. Any more attitude and they could have passed for Leona Helmsley and Marlon Brando.
What a sour pair. We spent days next to them at the beach and ate a couple dinners at the next table. Seemed obvious to me that they loathe Americans (no surprise there, I suppose), and they appeared unhappy with everything going on around them.
Hopefully their resort bears no reflection of their personalities. It's supposed to be very nice, bright, and relaxing.

Wow.
I'd have to disagee.
The Owner of Isle de France is the Anglican minister (yes from England)on St. Barts. I've always found him very personable.
Isle de France is beautiful, relaxing, and romantic and on this fine Island's best beach, Flamands.
You may check out a place with a little more privacy overlooking Flamands above the hotel with a spectacular view(Isle de France does not unless you're on the ocean side) that's very high on the romantic scale and a 5 min walk to the beach: stbartsvilla.com There is an even better restaruant that the hotel's about another 7 min down Flamamnds, was there last week.

The restaurant hostess told us of the couple I referred to above, so we took her at her word.
I find varying details about ownership ("family-run" vs. owner named Pilzen-something vs. details about the property's 'managers') so I can't verify who these folks were for sure.
One website says:
The Hotel Isle de France is a delightful boutique hotel, built in a gingerbread style of the colonial Caribbean. Mandie and her Taunton born manager Charles Walker have introduced a modern Nantucket-meets-St Tropez style of harmonised simplicity.
Mandie and Charles?

The Isle de France is a beautiful low-key small hotel with great rooms and service and I'd recommend it for a honeymoon. But be aware October is peak hurricane season.
Also, Le Toiny is an awesome small hotel on the other side of the island, very quiet and everyone has a private pool, where they serve you breakfast.
Don't miss Saline Beach too, it's the best on the island.

Charles Walker (another Brit) is the manager, and seems like he will do anything to accomdate the Guests, his wife Mandie is French, and works there as well. They're both and classy, nice, and very competent. Remember, however, that many of the rooms at IsdeF only have garden views --and they quote their rate in Euros. A slight negative is the presence of large E-Coast clientele -- sometime there it can seem like you never left Manhattan. Saline beach is indeed beautiful, but Flamands right there is the better swimming plage--sans rocks. The last Hurricane was in '99 and it came the first of November, so have a great trip!
