Honeymoon in August - Which Island?

My fiance and I are going on our honeymoon from August 11th - 21st. We definitely want to go to the Carribean, have researched everything, but still can't decide. What is important to us is:
- Good weather! (sunny, warm)
- Beautiful beaches
- Relaxing atmosphere
- Nice places to dine in the evening, and maybe a couple of nice beach bars
- Romantic hotel room/suite

That sounds pretty generic, but I've heard various things about the different islands. We were thinking of Aruba, but only because of the lack of rain in August. However, I hate wind. I've heard lots of mixed messages on the wind in Aruba.
Is it really windy in August or can someone like me deal with it?

I'd rather risk the hurricane thing and go to Antigua, for example, since the beaches and atmosphere there seem more like what we're looking for...

Can anyone give me some info on the weather in the Carribean in August and what island would be good during that time?

Thanks in advance!

Sandals St.Lucia, bluff suites with your own plung pool in your room. It out of the hurrican belt and it is a very tropical lush beautiful island. The resort is super, lots of great resturants to choose from and wonderful staff.Email me if you have any ?'s. Go to www.sandals.com

Kerri, I agree that Aruba is your best bet. August is definately hurricane season and even St.Lucia or Grand Cayman (southern Carib) might have severe rain. Aruba is a windy island (why its great for windsurfing)but never bad enough that you can't sit on the beach. The people are lovely, and you should definately stay at The Hyatt. It's a great upscale resort for your Honeymoon. Congrats.

Kerri, my fiancee and I are getting married this August as well and I've booked a wonderful honeymoon in the Turks & Caicos Islands (www.turksandcaicostourism.com) near the Bahamas. The beaches and water are amazing and it's not overly developed so you won't be fighting any huge crowds. We're staying at The Sands at Grace Bay (www.thesandsresort.com) but there are several small resorts to choose from. None are over 3 stories tall so the view is pristine. The islands are extremely laid back and relaxing. Looking forward to relaxing on the beautiful beaches of Grace Bay. Good luck with your search.

Be advised that Turks & Caicos is not out of the hurricane zone! Gets real boring on an island with not much to do when you have a lot of rain and have to stay inside.

If your honeymoon is in August (rainy season) you'd better choose a "flat" island. Barbados is supposed to have nice weather in July/August.

My husband and I went to St. Lucia in late August and stayed at the Sandals Golf Resort. Weather was beautiful lots of sun no rain. Island was gorgeous, but a poor island. We rented a jeep and toured the island very exciting. The resort was awesome, lots of honeymooners, food was delicious, pool was big with swim up bar. Beach was okay at Golf Resort but Halycon Sandals beach was much better. Very relaxing and great resorts. We did look into Aruba and got negative reactions they told us it was a desert island I live in the desert so I wanted lush and tropical which St. Lucia definately is. I hope this helps, Good Luck.

Actually you can do both Anguilla and St Barts if you have the time split it up.

Hurricanes are possible in August so you might consider staying in the southern part of the Caribbean such as Barbados (Cobblers Cove is romantic) and Spice Island or LaLuna (Jerri Hall-Mick Jagger's ex stayed at LaLuna) in Grenada. Aruba is out of the hurricane belt--not plush like the other islands but they do have beautiful beaches and hotels. Restaurants in Aruba are outstanding and a car would be a plus--easy to drive. Mexico also has great resorts--especially Las Ventanas in Cabo and Hotel Villa Del Sol on beautiful Playa Ropa beach in Zihuatanejo (very romantic).

Reading the other post, I would recommend instead La Casa Que Canta Resort in Zihuatanejo Mexico--it is unbelievably romantic and luxurious in a beautiful setting by Playa La Ropa beach! Check out reviews, pix using Google. Also agree Cobblers Cove in Barbados is good selection.

kerri,

My husband and I have been to Sandals Antigua, Sandals St Lucia, Aruba (is too windy for us), Gallay Bay (Antigua),Beaches Royal Plantation (Ocho Rios) and Couples in Ocho rios.
We preferred the Beaches Royal Plantation in Ocho Rios. Because, beautiful beach ( the whole resort is beautiful and nothing is too much for the staff to do) Luxury room/excellent service, gourmet food and awesome drinks. Go to www.beaches.com to see the resort. For activities, do as much as you want or do nothing and very relaxing place. We went to Beaches Royal in last August and the weather was perfect. I'm sure you can find some comments on Fodor's site too. OR, www.wheretostay.com and read the review. This Saturday, we're going back to Ocho Rios and staying at Jamaica Inn. we decided to stay at Jamaica Inn (Jamaicainn.com) because we saw the resort last year and it is small (on about 8 acre), and very romantic place. Beautiful beach, with clear water, nice room and great service, (we had one dinner there). Dinner menu changes daily and if you don't like what's on the menu, they will fix you what you want. I only eat seafood. You can also have dinner in your room at the verenda with your own private waiter too. However, if you want more night life and more dinning options, go to Beaches Royal.
