Honeymooning in August

We will be going on our honeymoon in late August (wedding is August 21), what place is best to go where we can enjoy the sun and beach without the worry of a hurricane?

We would like to go to an All-Inclusive resort.

Thanks,
Charlyne

We were married on the 20th many moons ago. We went to Paradise Island Bahamas back than and had great weather, but flew home in a hurricane. If you want to avoid hurricanes, I recommend Aruba. It is not totally hurricane proof, but it is rare. We had a great time there last year. I would not recommend all inclusive here because of the great restaurants on the island. If you want to avoid hurricanes, go to Hawaii! If you truly want recommendations, you must have a budget in mind to spend. Bermuda is a lovely island and usually places require that you be on the breakfast and dinner plan. You would pay extra for lunches and drinks. If you go there, I recommend the Reefs club.
Anguilla has great resorts on beautiful beaches, St. John Caneel Bay is gorgeous.

Congrats on your wedding, we were married August 21 last year and honeymooned at Jumby Bay resort in Antigua after research on this message board and others. We absolutely loved it! It is hurricane season, but we just purchased trip insurance (through travelex) for peace of mind. We plan to go back and will likely go at a similiar time as rates were low this time of year and the crowds were minimal (most families have children back in school by that date).
Another all-inclusive we looked at was Peter Island, but ultimately Jumby was the best fit for us...and we absolutely loved it. (Do a search, I posted a trip report on here about it when we returned.)
Best wishes with your plans!!
Cindy

While there are no guarantees when it comes to predicting when and where a hurricane will strike, generally speaking the further south in the Caribbean you go the less chance you will encounter a major storm. That said, August 2004 proved that storms can and do go through that area. One other thing to consider is that many Caribbean hotels and resorts are either closed or getting ready to close for the season and are operating on reduced staff at that time of year.

Look at islands such as Barbados, St. Vincent, the Grenadines, Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire, and Trinadad & Tobago. These island tend to be less in the path of hurricanes (but like I said there are not guarantees).

Any place in the northern portion of the Caribbean or throughout the Bahamas will be more subject to major storms. One last point, which doesn't make you selection process any easier, it's a big ocean so if yu decide on a northern Caribbean island and if there are no hurricane's brewing near your island of choice the weather at that time of year is apt to be quite nice. It really boils down to how much of a risk are you willing to take on your honeymoon.

We've been to Cancun the last week of August and the weather was perfect. Actually it was quite hot.

We've also been to the Bahamas (Nassau) the last week of August and barely missed hurricane Fabian. It was scheduled to hit on Thursday and ended up turning and hitting Bermuda instead. We had perfect weather until Saturday when it started raining, which was the day we left.

The weather is too unpredictable. For piece of mind I would try one of the Islands mentioned that are considered outside of the Hurricane Belt.

Thanks for the help! I'm really not sure of a budget, this trip will be a gift from my Aunt. I'll have to talk with her and a travel agent to get the best idea of the best place to go.
