If you want some real good information then you should check out the following link. It is the National Weather Service, National Hurricane Center and contains lots of relevant info, FAQ's, satellite imagery, plots and forecasts, etc.

That depends on your risk tolerance.
The trade-off for an October booking is that on the upside the rates are lower since many people don't want to go then; the downside is your trip could be ruined.
The actual risk in Jamaica is one major (named) storm or hurricane every 6 years, one hurricane every 11 years. If you consider that the season is 26 weeks long, the PER WEEK risk is 1 out of 156 of being there during a major (named) storm or hurricane.
Of course the place could be in a shambles for months after a bad storm, which would ruin your trip as well, so the chances of a ruined vacation are actually a bit greater than 1/156.
But you get the idea.

Just go!!! I've been to Jamaica in November and Cayman twice in Oct./Nov.
Weather was always good - short rains bursts occasionally but doesn't last long. You may come accross a tropical depression or something like that and yes there is a risk of a hurricane. But what are the odds? Don't let it ruin your trip.
Our last trip to Cayman we had Michelle go through the last week of our two week vacation. We still had fun - yes it was overcast and rained a lot but still wen to the beach... met lots of people wading in the water with the light sprinke of rain - it was fun. Had a great time at the seaside restaurants and bar's watching the wave action. The point here is, that you may come accross some bad weather and if you do, don't let it ruin the vacation. But you have a very, very, VERY good chance of sunshine. Also, I lived in Cayman for one year and from June to Nov. only came accross two tropical depressions that year. Once was a hurricane warning but only seemed to be a bad storm.
You'll have a great time in Jamaica!
