Looking for Winter Getaway Ideas!!
Does anyone have suggestions for a 5/6 night trip towards the end of December? Good weather is very important along with adequate nightlife and moderate prices. I have already been to Cancun, Jamaica, Florida Keys, and the Cayman Islands. I am thinking of the Bahamas, St. Maarten, St. Thomas, or Anguilla. My girlfriend and I are in our mid twenties. Any experiences you could share or other vacation ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Ron: Guess I can't agree with Cuba. I'm not putting any money in Castro's pocket. You can't travel there direct from the US, anyway. With the time of the year in mind, Bermuda would be a little cool (and many $$$) as well as the Bahamas, I think. My wife and I were in Nassau the first week of December, '96 and it got up to about 75F. Not that warm. Now, Provo in the Turks and Caicos may be a good choice as well as St. Lucia. I haven't been to either, but close friends have and loved them. Aruba would be warm enough, but personnally, I would suggest six nights as it's farther away. I have been to Aruba and loved it. It's dry (very), clean, affordable and fun. The people are great. I also have a friend that's been to Anguilla and said positive things about it, but I'm not sure of the weather. You can check annual climates in different regions on the web for help. Have fun!

My husband and I went to the Bahamas a few years ago because we were on a budget and had found a good deal. Beware! The price of the hotel (The Radison) was good but the accommodations were awful! The hotel hadn't been renovated since the 70's so you can imagine the decor. Restaurants automatically add a 15%25 gratuity so service is very poor. They're getting their tip anyway! I even went down to the hotel's restaurant to get a bagel for carryout before we checkout and they were going to charge me the 15%25 then (and the bagel was $5!). Also, even thought the beach was "private," only to be used by guests of the hotel, they let everyone on who wanted to sell you something. We didn't get more than five minutes of peace before someone would be harassing us to buy something. Also, the food was VERY expensive, especially if you will be ordering drinks. It's unfortunate, but everyone we've talked to since our bad experience in the Bahamas agrees that their trips were also poor. I wish they had said something before we went but they didn't want to ruin our trip. Good luck and have a great trip!

I would not recommend Bahama's this time of year if you are looking for temp in the 80's. St Maarten is a good choice and it does have plenty of nightlife. You might have difficulty in finding accomodations this late. Do you prefer a Hotel or Condominimum with Kitchen? Anguilla is a lovely Island, not much to do and practically no night life. St Thomas is also a good choice. If you decide on St Maarten I can make suggestions where to stay, and car rental company.

I wouldn't go to Bahamas for a few reasons, but now the biggest is El Nino says Bahanas and Cuba are going to be wetter and stormier than normal this winter. That would be enough to keep me away. Anyway, I heard that St. Lucia is a beautiful island. We almost went there this winter but then a travel agent told me that it is not known for it's beautiful beaches!! I also heard that Antigua is a fantastic place to go. We chose Cancun. Good luck and have fun wherever you go.
