South African needs info on Jamaica
I am a South African who would like to travel to Jamaica in December and need information on where to stay, how to meet people (locals)and especially how I can make contact with university professors as I teach psychology and women's studies at a University. My partner would like to know how to make contact with people in the legal field. We are intersted in the culture and history of the country.

You may look into lodging in the Kingston, the Capital City. The prominent colleges and universities are located in and around the Kingston area. You can also contact in New York City, the Jamaican Consulate for more detailed information. You should also contact the University of the West Indies.

Hi, Cheryl,
Try contacting the Jamaica Tourist Board in New York City at 1(800) 233-4JTB.
They should be able to provide you with more detailed information.
You may also want to visit the website Jamaica Resorts at http://www.Jamaicaresorts.com and post your request there. This website is hosted by Jamaican natives who may be able to provide you with some college info., general info., and further lodging info.
I have a colleague who works at a university in Jamaica who has many contacts. If you receive no further leads, please feel free to E-Mail me and I could give you his address and telephone number in Kingston.
Good luck.

Once last advice:
Go to www.infohub.com in the web. Select "Caribbean" under Global Destinations. Then select "Jamaica" from the Countries listing. You can explore from there. You can also access the "Jamaica Daily Gleaner" from that site or you may go directly to www.Jamaica-Gleaner.com.

Jamaica takes part in a program called People to People. Call the Jamaican Tourist office closest to you and sign up. They will of course ask you in which area of the island you will be visiting. They will set it up so that you can meet with other teachers in your areas of speciality if possible. They will also put your partner in contact with persons in the legal field. After the arranged meetings you may if you wish spend more time together and socialize. If you stay in Montego Bay remember that Kingston is 90 miles away and the road conditions make the trip a long one. If you choose to stay in Kingston be aware of who and what is around. Meaning like any large city there is crime, and areas of the city that one should not navigate on foot at night. As for the culture and history do some reading before you go. It will make what you do and see more interesting. The people are warm and friendly so enjoy.
