True Caribbean St Kitts
St Kitts, one of the real deal Caribbean islands. Very laid back; no pressure at all. Lots of tidbits to pass along. We stayed at Timothy Beach Resort for 9 days beginning of February 07. Timothy is not a hotel but rather a group of individually owned studio or 1 bedroom units very well maintained by an on site manager. You cannot beat the value of this rental for many reasons. 1. It has its own tiny beach area with thick cushioned beach loungers, picnic tables with umbrellas; part of the cost of staying there; no extra charge like some places are doing now. 2. Right off the beach is a deck area with additional comfortable loungers. 3. Right above that area is a their very own Sunset Café. 4. Up one set of stairs brings you to a newly renovated very clean pool area that also includes different loungers and tables with umbrellas. 5. Footsteps away from the Timothy café brings you to a small stand where you can purchase great trinkets and now you enter the first of about 10 beach bars, one better than the other on a very nice - water you can swim in - beach. This area is where chairs and umbrellas are available to rent (by many day trippers from the cruise ships). 6. Safe walking distance, maybe 10 minutes the other way brings you a great choice of restaurants. PJ’s is a fabulous place for reasonably priced quality food & is noted for their pizza. Very friendly staff. 7. Rock Lobster, our favorite for star lit outdoor dining with excellent service, tremendous menu. They make you feel as though you are family and not a customer. 8. Island Hopper tiny boutique shop also on this stretch and worthy of stopping in to buy one of the islands famous handmade Batik fashions. 9. You will also find several other eateries in this area. 10. Each step of the way on your walk your scenery is enhanced by the infamous 18 hole golf course adjacent to it’s owner the Marriott boasting of expansive grounds with elaborate décor and a great casino. We met many couples that complained the quality of food at the Marriott did not match their service reputation or price. 11. Along this stretch is the taxi stand where we met our nicest friend during our stay. Samuel Williams. Reliable Taxi. Cell 663-3828. or 465-9779. Tell him you found his name through this writing as we told him we’d highly recommend him. He took us to the super market to get our food for the week; a few breakfast and lunch items goes a long way. He can help you find cigarettes, spirits, pharmacy, anything you need! We also used his services for a half-day tour of the island. It was the best part of the trip. He took us all around the entire island. VERY reasonable compared to the train ride alternative that did not cover nearly as much and then of course no personalization. We’re not much for touristy things, but this was really nice. Samuel stopped and patiently waited while we saw the different sites. The fort is an absolute must. Pick up the audio hand held device explaining all the points of interest. Really fantastic piece of history currently being restored. You are up so high overlooking the sea you can’t help but feel the history that took place there. Another especially nice treat was lunch at the oh so picturesque Ottley’s Plantation located in the mountain. Spectacular meticulously manicured grounds offer truly beautiful vistas while you dine and there is an actual rainforest on site. Pricing matches service and high quality menu .
We opted to take a very inexpensive ferry over to Nevis and once again hired Samuel for arrangements to and from the pier. The main deal on Nevis is the Four Seasons Resort. It is unto itself is all I can say. We were told it actually dictates the island’s economy. We stayed just for several hours. Took a cab around for a bit. Found this fabulous little hideaway right at the dock. Pas Turner Waterfront Bar. You simply can’t beat the warmth he permeates and check out the cook and her stove. Priceless! Would definitely return.

Great report!
I don't get the feel of St. Martin from the beach bars in St. Kitts. Totally different islands. St. Kitts is very laid back and people talk and interact a lot more than on SXM..I have found that on SXM, people tend to keep to themselves. Just my experience.
The beach bars on St. Kitts are very fun, especially Mr. X's.

Thanks for taking the time to post your trip report. Sounds like you had a great time. Have you planned your return trip yet?
I think it's a little funny that you say that the Four Seasons is the main deal on Nevis but that you don't mention the same thing about the Marriott on St. Kitts. In my opinion they're in two entirely different leagues: one is a smaller luxury resort that tried hard not to look out of place in its local surroundings while the other is a sprawling behemoth that totally dominates and looks out of place in its local landscape.

Hi Deborah -- I am going to St. Kitts and Nevis at the end of the month -- staying at the Marriott (on points) and then on to Nevis and Nisbet Plantation. We visited St. Kitts and the Marriott for one day last year on a cruise stop. Can I walk to the Timothy Beach area from the Marriott? Last year I walked the Marriott beach (to the left as I was facing the water so I guess I was walking along the Atlantic side?) for quite a distance but most of it is undeveloped land. On the right side of the resort I think I recall some barrier to my walking the other direction -- rocks or a fence or something. Wondering if I find a way to get to the beach on that side if it is walkable to the Caribbean and Timothy Beach. Or if I can walk across the golf course to get to it?

Eileen, it's very easy to walk from the Marriott to Timothy Beach Resort. From the Marriott, take a left on the paved road, where you'll walk by the Sugar Bay Club and a few condo establishments. You'll also pass by the ROck Lobster and other places deborah mentions in her post.
Follow the road to the roundabout, at which point you'll be able to see the sea directly in front of you. Follow that road and TBR will be on your left where the beach begins, and to your right will be several beach bars, the first of which is Mr. X's. It's a mostly level, easy walk and depending on your pace should be around 15 minutes' steady but not vigorous walking.

Deborah:
Glad you enjoyed your stay in St. Kitts. I also enjoyed staying at Timothy Beach Resort and prefer this over the Marriott.
You should post your review at www.myislands.myeyez.net

Eileen: How was your trip? Did you mean the new Marriott Timeshare property on St. Kitts or the hotel? We are thinking of going to the TS property. Any comments wld be appreciated! Is the beach a nice beach for long walks?

The beach at the Marriott is nice but not great for taking long walks. Visit South Friars or Cockleshell instead.

You are correct highflyer. SKB is the airport code in St. Kitts.
Did you work or go to school in St. Kitts? Have you gone back to St. Kitts? Lots of changes.

Hi skbfan,
I was a teacher at Cayon High School. It was a VSO post which is the British equivalent to Peace Corps.
My husband was also a VSO; he taught at Basseterre High School for 3 years and we haven't been back since 1990 when we returned to the UK for the birth of our now 16 yr old son.
We'd really like to go back and see some old friends sometime in 2008...
