What's the best way to get to Virgin Gorda?
Can't quite figure out how one gets to VG from the States. Is there an airport in VG-- or, like St John, does one ferry to the island? Does one fly to St Thomas or to Tortola? Etc. Thanks.

There is a small airport on Gorda but the owners are threatening to close it and the airlines that fly there have reliability issues.
My preference is to fly American Eagle from San Juan to Tortola, then take a ferry to VG.
You can take the ferry from St. Thomas to VG, but there are stops (and sometimes changes) in between and it's a pain, esp. with luggage.

we always book through American. Direct flight from Boston to San Juan, change planes to Tortola. Go to http://www.VirginIslandsMap.com/virg...rries-link.htm for a full schedule of the ferries. Depending on where you are staying on Virgin Gorda will determine which ferry service to use. We always use North Sound Express

Thanks, folks.
Ralstonlan: I tried that ferry website and couldn't bring it up. I wish I knew for sure abt the airport and ferry situation. Need to get air reservations made (frequent flyer) and just don't know whether to fly from Miami into St. Thomas or to Tortola. (Since we live several hours from the Miami airport, we'll be getting in late in either case. I suppose I may have to overnight in either place.)
Thanks again. (And I hope to hear more replies.)

I recommend booking your air and then dealing with the ferry later. There is more than one ferry company and more than one website. You'll want to confirm times just before you go anyway, because they change.
If you fly into STT and arrive after 4 pm or so, you'll definitely have to stay overnight. On the other hand, there are later ferries from Tortola to VG (maybe as late as 7 or 7:30 pm, last I checked).

Like most have said, the ferry ride is shorter from Tortola. We flew to Tortola (Beef Island - EIS) and took Speedy's Ferry to Leverick Bay in Virgin Gorda.
Here's a link that I used to look at ferry times:
