Where to camp on North Coast?

We are thinking about going to Jamaica this winter and were wondering if there are any designated places to camp. Please let us know if anyone has information about this.

Erica, camping in most places in the Carribean is not a great idea. There are few places set up to support camping and in Jamacia, that is probably a really bad idea. There are inexpensive places to stay on Jamacia. We got a price of $450 for a week plus airfare out of NYC.

I would suggest checking with a travel agent in your area for package deals airfare and hotel, sometimes you can get some great deals.

Good luck

There are a lot in Negril - mostly hotels with a secured area outside that you can camp in for $10/nightish, showers available etc. If you're comfortable with it, many families will let you camp in their yards for a small amount of $. I'm sure there are places in other areas, I just haven't seen them personally.

There aren't really state parks like the US where you can camp and camping on the beach or by the road is NOT recommended.

I'd spend $16 and get a copy of Lonely Planet Jamaica (am I allowed to say that on the Fodor's board?). It has lots of info on camping as well as history, places to go, public transport and so on. It's kind of budget-adventure oriented.
<BR Liz

Try getting in touch with a guy who worked out an incredible itinerary for a friend and I. We just got back from a 2 week long camping excursion on the island and it was amazing. Everything from rustic to semi to not so. He doesn't charge a penny for his time, but will ask you to take the time to give him lots of details about what you like or expect or want so he can match you up with places to go and friends of his that will look out for you as if they've known you for years. Nothing fake about this guy or the people he'll link you to, genuine and safe all the way. His name is Bill and you can find him on the jamaicans.com Adventure message board or I can probably dig around in my backpack and find his email adress.

Bill's email is [email protected] - he will almost certainly be able to help you.
<BR Liz
