New England/Canada Cruise- Celebrity
My husband and I are going on a 14 day New England/Canadian cruise. I'm concerned about cold weather???? We depart on Oct 10th. We will be docking in Newport, Rhode Island, Boston, Portland, Bar Harbor, Halifax, Quebec and Charlottetown. Any suggestions on side trips to take? I'm not opposed to finding our own tours rather than always going on a tour promoted by the cruise line. Suggestions are welcomed.

As a Bostonian let me answer,I've done this trip twice.. First.. in Newport go to the tourist center and buy a trolley tour of Newport or a tour of some of the houses.. Boston.. my city.. the fun thing is to book a DuckTour and you can do it on line y ourself.... as a Bostonian I hadn't realized how much fun they were.. As a matter of fact we have friends coming in on the same shp on he 15th and are doing the Duck Tour.. and then we are taking them to Skipjacks for seafood although there is a Legal not far away.. Or you can follow the Freedom Trail in downtown Boston to the North end.. Portland. okay if you want you can get a ride up to Freeport and do major outlet shopping or walk Harbor Port or take a boat ride to see the lighthouses.. Bar Harbor..there is Acadia National Park and the best lobster shack EVER in my opinion.. i is over the bridge and you pick out your lobsters, soft or hard shell, the size, and add what we do.. steamers, corn and iced coffee... go next door to the upstairs deck and enjoy.. Halifax..my favorite Canadian city.. I know it sounds morbid but hire a taxi and go to see the graves of the Titanic victims and then the Citadel for the changing of the guard.. or take a boat out to go whale watching....Have'n been to Quebec or Charlottetown.. Yes, the weather will be cool.. and the foliage out.. enjoy

Duck tour for Boston ... why haven't I think of it or tries it? ParrortMom covers Boston and Newport pretty well.
Charlottetown is a small island. Mostly Canadian Historic Site (their Confedercy started there?) such as Baconsville Historic Hosue, Province House Historic Site, Founders' Hall etc. There are some old churches and the Confederation Center of Arts could be worth a visit. You may also consider the PEI miniature village.
While in PEI, visit the Olde Dublin Pub. There is a samll Irish population and many authentic Irish Pubs.
As to Qubec City, walk around the lower town (Basseville) which was the origianl settlement. Upper town (Hauteville) is walled with ramparts. I was told that's the only walled city left in North AMerica. La Citadelle offers great view of the city and the River as it is built on the highest point.
Morrin Centre is most interesting. It is a library now but it started life as a jail 200 years ago. Guided tour is available. Here is a link to their photos on line. http://www.morrin.org/pages/photo.php

ESCHEW - Used to think the Duck Tour was only for tourists when we took it with Fla cruise friends.. it was a hoot.. Learned more about Boston than I thought I knew especially the Charles River. Of all the Duck Tours this is the most successsful, I've seen one in Boston Harbor and I thnk they can't do Newbury Street anymore. Did you know that during the floods in Boston months ago.. one was used to get residents to and from their homes I think in Wayland. On our next on the 15th of this month, if the circumstances are right.. may try to pull a big celebration with the help of North End friends on the tour..
