OK..now I'm worried!

We have just booked a Southern Caribbean cruise on the Norwegian Sky for the end of January.(a brief escape from a Southern Ontario winter) On this and other forums I have been reading about the tiny cabin(we have a BB), lack of storage space, bad food, arrogant wait staff etc, etc, etc. Then we read everything is really "wonderful". So....if you have recently travelled on the Sky let me know what you think. Have we made a huge, expensive mistake? This will be our first cruise!! We are very laid back people, not easily upset by the little things and chose this cruise line because of the freestyle aspect. Thanks!!

I cruised the Sky in March 2001 and here are my thoughts. Other than the smaller than normal staterooms (small but not unbearable) I thought the cruise was GREAT! The only suggestion I would make is to try and eat early. We never had to wait to get a seat but usually as we were leaving there were line ups. I would cruise the SKY again in a minute.

To compare, I've cruised RCCL & Celebrity and feel that the SKY was in the same league as these. As with any line, some things will be better and some will be worse but you should have a good cruise.

Don't worry. We enjoyed our cruise on the Sky last May in Alaska. Do make reservations and dine at some of the alternative restaurants especially the Bistro and Horizons - they are well worth the extra charge. That is my one gripe about NCL - their main dining room food quality can sometimes be hit or miss. We love freestyle though - our last seven cruises have been some form of open dining and it's hard to think about going back to traditional dining. If you are laid back and easy going, you should be fine. I think a lot of the people that dislike freestyle are the ones who have cruised before and are used to/prefer traditional dining. They find freestyle frustrating whereas we are the other way around.

Found a link that should help comfort you. http://psp.club.tip.nl/ has pictures and a few reviews. Take a good look at the Sky and relax!

Heather,

I have read lots of reviews on this ship. Yes, the cabins are smaller and lack storage space. You can get the cabin size from your TA.
As far as freestyle dining goes, I am opposed to this. It only seems to work when you eat early. Don't try to eat at 7:00 or 7:30, you will
probably have a very long wait. I don't what to have to make reservations or wait in line for a table. I like to eat at the same time, have the same table, and same waiter. You chose this cruise because of the freestyle dining. NCL's advertising is very good, but that is not what it turns out to be unless you want to eat a 5:00. Eating when you want and where you want seems great on the suface but be prepared to wait in line. Also check into which restaurants have an addional charge.

HI!!!
Thanks for your responses! I feel a lot better about setting sail on the Sky and look forward to our winter vacation. The web site helped Rick. Great pictures. I guess like most things in life, it's what you make of it that counts.

Heather

Heather...We sailed the Sky to Alaska Sept15...After reading many posts on different cruise boards, we opted for the alternative dining rooms every night...It turned out to be the right choice for us...Awesome service and food...Do try LeBistro and Horizons (this one being our favorite)...Our outside stateroom on deck 4 was just fine for us...Expected it to be very small, so we were not disappointed in it's size...The best thing we brought was an over the door shoe rack for the bathroom door--will never sail again without it...The room had only three small drawers, for this problem we brought a hanging shoe bag for the closet and used it for miscellaneous small items, along with-yep!-shoes...We enjoyed the Sky, although we do prefer the traditional dining...this was our 4th cruide with NCL, usually use RCI...We are contemplating the Sky next Dec.for a back-to-back cruise, the southern Caribbean is our favorite itinerary...Happy Sailings...Helen

Did the Sky on it's first Panama Canal trip..ship is lovely.casual dining wasn't in effect at that time..Just did the Brilliance and although the ship is magnificent preferred the food on the Sky..and the entertainment which is far superior than RC The Bistro is wonderful..the Horizon st the time was not an alternstive restaurant

I was on the NCL Sun in April which is basically the Sky's sister ship and had a great time. I have also been on Princess and RCL many times and I will say that YOU WILL like this cruise. Especially since this is your 1st and you have nothing to compare it to.

As for freestyle, the restaurants might cost a little but they are excellent and you usually save on the cruise fare as compared to other lines - so it evens out.

Bottom line... IT'S A CRUISE! YOU WILL HAVE A GREAT TIME!

T.

Heather,
just got back off the Sky to Alaska. We were first time cruisers, bought it on E-bay, then started reading all these horrible negative feedback!!!!! We were JUST like you. RELAX. It was wonderful, the staff was amazingly polite and helpful, the food was good to great, the room was a bit small, but easy to deal with (forewarned is forearmed), etc. If you are very laid back as you say, you will LOVE it. Goforth and have fun!!!!
