Train from Rome to the Cruise Port
How difficult is it to get to the train station and how much, do they charge for bags, etc. and once at the Port.. are there taxis to take you to the ship?

Hi PM,
Have you considered renting a car for the day?
That is what we will be doing on our upcoming cruise out of Civitavecchia.
Rented through www.autoeurope.com for a Sunday.

Not sure if any of the prior postings have made the trip. Not sure what you are asking --- How difficult is it to get to the train station and how much, do they charge for bags -----
You get to Termini via taxi, bus, or whatever means are available. There is no charge on the train for bags. However, it is very long walk from the front of Termini to the tracks used for Civitavechia -- track 24,25 in the far, far right hand corner of the station as you face the tracks. Train is about 45 to 1:15 depending on the train and there are 3 to 4 trains an hour.
Once at the station in Civit.. you are about half mile, maybe a little less, fromthe port entrance. There is a 1.10E shuttle but the bus is small and the line is long. Taxis are available but will charge two arms for the short trip. We normally walk since it is flat and along the beach. Once inside the port entrance, a shuttle bus will take you to your ship's checkin point.

ParrotMom - how about hiring a car? We're using Rome Cabs to pick us up from the port and take us to the airport at the end of our cruise - www.romecabs.com They came highly recommended on CC (Cruise Critic)

Problem is hopefully solved.. Several cruisers from another board are hiring a limo/van to get to the port from Rome. Let me give a big HEADS UP..Friends just came back and using the train back and forth, plus (these are five seasoned cruising adults their first time in Rome) had horrible experiences with pickpockets and on the train man exposing himself... This is not a joke.. Many of the cruisers she spoke to were victims while doing tours on their on in Rome and in Athens. Oh yes.. we have used "romeinlimo" successfully several times.

Something else is going on. Or the seasoned travelers are not very savvy. We have made that run 10 times (four cruises and one Rome stop) and have never had a problem. Have spent over three weeks total in Rome. Never seen a pickpocket.

I agree with fmpden - we have never had a problem either. We are very careful with our personal items so it doesn't make it easy for pickpockets. Have spent time in Rome, Athens, Rio, Buenos Aires etc. The key is keep valuables out of sight. We have certainly seen many tourists with purses in plain view - wallets in back pockets etc. So be cautious and you will be fine.
