10 Days in Spain
I am meeting my husband in Madrid to start a 10-day jaunt through Spain. We are both avid explorers of Italy, but this will be our first trip to Spain. I've just begun my research and have us set for 2 days in Spain in early March. We definitely want to see Sevilla and Granada, and thought Barcelona made sense but I'm not sure how to get back to Madrid without losing a bunch of time. We travel through Italy via train and bus - i.e. no rental car - but I wonder if the same approach is recommended in Spain. For those of you who are well-traveled in Spain, what is the ideal 10-day itinerary originating and ending in Madrid? Does the train/bus combo work well, or do we lose lots of time?

Except for AVE (Madrid-Sevilla) I would recommend buses over trains for most shorter trips. Some of the MotorCoach lines have a Business Class service on nonstop services like Madrid-Santander or Madrid-Bilbao. MotorCoach Companies have their own names for this service (Clase Supra, for ex.) but I have used such on Continental-Auto and Alsa-Enatcar.
2004 is an Anho Jubilar Xacobeo (Holy Year) in Santiago de Compostela where the Apostle Iago (Jacques or James the Elder) is interred beneath the main altar of in the Basilica. It's the Capital of the Xunta do Galizia in the northwest but there will be thousands of Pilgrims trekking along the Camino de Santiago.
Couquilles St. Jacques is named for Santiago. Maybe it's because the badge if the Pilgrim is the Scallop shell on his/her cloak.

I know others with more experience will answer, but as I am planning a similar length trip for February, I have a thought that might help.
You can fly cheaply and quickly from Madrid to Barcelona or from Barcelona to Granada. Each flight is about 30 euros and takes less than an hour.
It's worth considering - it would really help you be able to see Madrid, Barcelona, and then a little of Andalusia in the 10 days you have.

I agree with kaudrey. If you want to see Barcelona, the only practical way to get back to Madrid is to fly. The train ride takes 7-8 hours and the scenery is not interesting. As pointed out above, you may be able to get a fare of around 30-35 euros if you book in advance - these fares sell out quickly.
