2nd Base for Tuscany Trip - Montalcino, Montepulciano, Cortona or Chianti?

We have decided on San G. as our base for Tuscany, and based on what we have read, and are told, think it might be good to have a second base, different location.

Our choices are:
Montalcino, Montepulciano, Pienza, Cortona, and Chianti (Radda, Greve or Castellina).

We have found hotels we like in some of the towns:

Locanda dell Amorosa near Pienza
Chiostro in Pienza
Il Falconiere in Cortona
Villa Vignamaggio in Greve
Relais Fattoria Vignale in Radda

We cannot seem to find comparable hotels/inns in Montalcino or Montepulciano.

We also cannot find a web site that describes the towns - population, things to do/see, restaurants, etc. All of our guidebooks give more historical descriptions. It is hard to get a sense of what these towns really offer.

We'd like something in a different location with a different atmosphere than San G.

If anyone can give other hotel suggestions, and pros/cons of the places we have chosen, we'd appreciate it. We love a place we can walk around and walk out at night to restaurants, shops etc. We don't want to be driving at night.

Thanks.
