Dear Forum Members,

We are planning a trip to Alsace Region in the last week of October. We have our daughter who us 4 yr old with us.
So the trip is like this...
- Arrive from Dubai at CDG on 25th evening by 7 pm and stay at a hotel close to Airport
- 26th Oct - Travel to Alsace region and here is where we need suggestions as to where should we stay - Strasbourg OR Riquewihr OR Colmar OR Barr (i read somewhere about it). We will rely completely on public transport and looking for a decent but not too expensive Airbnb.
- 27th - Alsace Region (AR) Day trips from our base
- 28th - AR
- 29th - AR
- 30th - AR
- 31st - AR OR Return to Paris
- 1st Nov - Paris
- 2nd Nov - Return back from Paris

We have been to Paris thrice earlier so we can skip staying/ Sightseeing in Paris

Request suggestions for an itinerary please. We love old towns, local culture, cuisines, love to explore old bars etc. We will also travel by public transport hence will need to stay somewhere central.

Alsace has some wonderful walks, up into the Vosges, through the vines, great views and calmness. Good wine and some stodgy food. I'd look at Riquewihr. You can find Airbnb both on the site but also the town website or search gite on Google maps.

You could then use trains to visit Strasbourg, Colmar etc.

Lots of castles, a concentration camp and walled villages.

HI. I've been doing lots of research for our trip to Alsace region as well. Here is what we are doing 15-24 of October,

Arrive on 15th - Basel, Switzerland which is just over the border from Alsace region. We fly directly from Austin to Amsterdam to connect to Basel. It was a great suggestion from a fellow Fodorite. I would never have thought of it myself. We will spend 2 nights and 1.5 days in Basel.

On the 17th - we will take the train from Basel to Colmar, spending one night and 1.5 days. We plan to rent a car for the day and drive to the wine villages including Riquewihr, Ribeau and one other.

On the 18th 20th - we will take train from Colmar to Strasbourg, which is where we will spend the next two days and two nights. If we have time we will go to the Champagne area.

One the 21st - we will head to Paris for a few days (we've been numerous times so this visit is just soaking up Paris by sipping and eating our way around the city.

October 23 - We will take Eurostar to London for a couple of nights to reconnect with some friends.

October 24 - We then fly home to Austin.

All in we have 8 tourist days and 2 days of "travel days."

We plan to cycle where we can (Strasbourg, wine tour), take a hot air balloon ride and a boat ride.

We loved our stays in Strasbourg and Riquewehr.
From Riquewehr we visited many other charming wine villages. Thatched roofs and storks, charm. Didn’t care for Colmar.

Public transport in the area is mainly trains heading north south (not to every village but to a fair few). Buses do exist but tend to focus on the school run and getting to and from work. https://www.visit.alsace/en/getting-around-in-alsace/

Bike hire is a serious opportunity. October can be anything from 15C to 25C and there is a route du vin just for bicycles which keeps you off the route du vin for vehicles. Walking is a serious hobby in the area and tourist info will have local maps as will most B&B and AirBnB.
