MB,I understand what you are saying.Straight away I played the game, remember notgay and rita. Marilyn and Helen found me out It's the bad typing.
The people on this site are good people. They just don't like to play like that.
The Thorntree is the place. There are more Brits and Aussies and they enjoy satire and really good trolls.I really enjoyed your posting, must be that juvenile humour.I never have to try and discover my inner child. It's always right there.
After being on this site almost a year.I am used to these Fodorites now and really they are so nice it puts somebody like me to shame.
I visit the Thorntree for humour and here for the sensible folk.

Don't stop having fun. I know I never will.

Yeah Mary-Beth!
I am not the god fearing sort but I am a realist. Thank you very much for your WARNING. And it is just that, a warning.
People need to take it with a grain of salt or just leave it. Many squeaky wheels are over senstive so of course they have to bash at someone. Sorry you had to be the target this week.
Better luck to you with travels! May I suggest conferring in advance with Christian organizations in the areas you will be travelling in the future.
Have a lovely day and keep your faith!

"Mary-Beth",

At first I was surprised that your posting got 80 replies in 3 days.

When I read your posting about actually being a gay male, I was very much irritated.

Living in a country other than Spain (or an area other than the EU), I would not know that Sitges (is this a real city?) caters to gay males-I assume this is so based on your later 'coming out' post.
I would have responded to the original posting based on the narrow-mindedness of the posting not on the city you mentioned. The fact that you claim to actually be a gay male and seem to be testing us makes me mad.
Many people around the world log on to this base. You cannot expect even 30% of us to know any popular gay resorts/cities in areas other than where we live. An unfamiliar person may have picked this place from a map or from a book.
I called a gay male couple I know (they said it was o.k. to use this phrase) who are going to Spain this week and they had no idea about Sitges. Their response was one of disgust that you would actually 'fool' us with this posting.
Kittie
Post title 'A Warning', is very seductive wording. 'Fodorite' eloquence was a joy to read. After researching Sitges, a resort town on the Mediterranean, 30 kilometers from Barcelona [Costa Daurada]and reading the list of events that occur each year, it actually sounds like a good place to visit when in Barcelona if only for a day.
'Mary-Beth' claims to be age 41...but are we really certain? Found the 'coming out' post more irritating than the original post.
Folks on this forum, not surprisingly, took time to state their outrage and disgust. What bothers me more is the European forum was exploited and the original post is a blatant put down of American females, i.e. 'Mary-Beth'. I know Sitges appears lovely [at least from the webpage] and perhaps if anyone is traveling to Spain, one could enjoy sight seeing in a lovely spot on the Meditterean.

Dear elaine, kittie and others,

I agree with you.

It is sad (and tragic) that, with the easy access to an internet, people forget to pause and ponder the consequences of their actions. Are we all so vain to see our names in print?

MaryBeth (supposedly gay) -- in his/her "coming out" post -- claimed [quoting her/him] that it was "a rather silly joke... supposed to be completely tongue-in-cheek". Have you read the story of the high school students who got sued (in real life) because they published false information about their teachers in their personal webpage? The teachers could have stretched their sense of compassion, after all the perpetuators were just high school students.

But for a 41 yo and gay male and Brit at that, to commit the same ruse? And for what? For personal fun? To quote MaryBeth: "It is cheering, but hardly surprising that so many of the Fodorites hold such liberal views." [I wish she/he were indeed a rather witty Brit and was diabolically intelligent enough to decide her/his gender in the first place, so that my posting will not be so confused with she/he and her/him. Why could she/he not have come out as a Brit "lesbian"? Are Brit "lesbians" any less witty than Brit gays? After all, we do not have any way of checking her/his identity -- his/her e-mail is fictitious. Was she/he afraid of being spammed?]

When having fun -- through forum posting or disrupting chat rooms -- no longer satiate our desire for exhiliration, what will be next? I am reminded of a young guy who thought it would be fun to play "hold up" with his toy gun in a store. Unfortunately for him, the store owner had a shot gun and was not cowered; the young guy died. Have you read also of these very intelligent college boys who thought it would be fun to have sex with this "loose" girl? They got sentenced and sent to jail for rape.

When does learning from experience -- becoming the greatest teacher of us all -- set in our lives? At 42 yo?

Writing comedy, satire, clever retorts, etc. requires great discipline and wit -- if we are to be understood. If I fail in this, I have a good excuse -- English is not my native tongue. But, "Mary-Beth, American, godfearing, rural homemaker, [is supposedly] a 41 year old British gay man". What I could do with "words" if I were a "41 yo Brit gay". And, if I am not as gifted but have a longing passion to fame, I would be a reader first of Oscar Wilde, HL Mencken or Walter Lipmann before trying any of these types of writing.

And, if pea-brained people like me did not get the "supposed ruse" of MaryBeth in the first post (in this thread), I have this lame excuse (radically paraphrasing Sen. Lloyd Bentsen's (famous retort to Vice President Dan Quayle in 1988):

"The first post is no Oscar Wilde!"

neil
Fascinating how this thread, which is really only about tolerance/intolerance of homosexuality, is allowed to hang around these boards for five years yet posts about the Amazing Race are summarily pulled.

Grinisa,
I was thinking the same thing...this thread that started because someone has a fear of catching homosexualty is travel related, but the Amazing Race, a show about people who travel around the world is not?!?!? Very interesting...I repeat, I bet you Fodor's is somehow owned by the same company that owns one of the other networks and the advertisement Amazing Race was getting was too much for them.
But now, that we can disguise a Amazing Race thread on this thread...wasn't it 'amazing' that Chip and Kim won..for once the good guys actually did come in first!
