hello, we are taking 3 weeks to visit berlin, milan and our last 4 days will be spent in Rome. I am trying to find accommodation for 2 adults and 4 children which is proving very difficult. I have been checking hotels and hostels and it seems that we are being charged for 6 adults. Does anyone have any experience of traveling with children where accommodation was less than €150 a day. We have 22 nights of accommodation to pay for. I assumed children were given special rates. Have also sent emails to the convents in rome but most are full or charging over 200 a day for us. anyone any suggestions? thanks, coco

You might have better luck with an apartment, assuming you can get one for 4 days.

Not sure why you think you are being charged for 6 adults - your budget is very low for 6 anything. And very few hotels even have facilities that will hold a family of 6 - 4 is the more usual for a family room. Are you asking for 3 separate double rooms? If so - then the children would cost as much as adults - since they are not low cost add-ons - but taking a full room.

Also - not sure how old your children are - but usually that would be small children - not full size ones (as in 12 and up).

I have looked at sleepinitaly which has more options than i had seen on other sights. I have 3 children under the age of 6 and i did see some hotel rooms with room for 4 so i had thought about getting one of these plus a double but we are not being offered any reduction for the children. I think being charged €250 a night without breakfast is a lot. We have 22 nights of accommodation, maybe i am being naive!! thanks for the advise. Does anyone know if children are charged the same price as adults for hostels. I have seen very nice rooms with 6 beds. Thanks for the advise. Coco

DO look at apartments!! sleepinitaly,com is only one site for them. There is also Italyperfect.com, rentvillas.com, VRBO,com (Vacation Rentals By Owner) Also airbnb.com You get bedrooms, a living room, and a small kitchen. Even if you only have breakfast and snacks in the place, it works out very well. It's more room for a group, and easier to relax than in a small hotel room. (European hotel rooms are very small.)

You can find apartments in other countries, too. Google vacation rentals followed by the name of the city.

If you have seen very nice rooms with 6 beds in hostels I would enquire the cost. Typically for that sort of situation there is a specific charge per room - not per person - since you are taking the entire room.

Have you looked at eurocheapo.com to see if any places have family accommodations that will hold 6 people?

I must admit that I think your budget in in sufficient for 6. In NYC it's illegal to put more than 4 people in one room - you would have to get either a suite or 2 rooms. And $200 per night - $230 with taxes - would be an incredible bargain for a suite in even the most modest hotel - except perhaps in Jan, when the number of tourists is limited and hotels practically give rooms away.

How old are the kids? Many hostels have minimum age limits.

If they're all over 10, look at the Bee Hive mixed-gender dorm rooms (perhaps you could take an entire room). The rate (March 1 - Oct. 31) is 30 euros per person.

Try the Domus Julia. They have apartment type suites, which include breakfast at their Hotel Julia next door.

What date are you in Rome. €150 goes further in the off season. And definitely go with an apartment. For eg. this one is well located - http://www.myrome.info/monticelli74_eng.html. Note though it is on the 2nd floor without an elevator.

I can;t tell from the map exactly where this aparmtment is - but it seems to be a fantastic deal and also provides the opportunity to have a cheaper breakfast and snacks in the apartment. It is 10 euros more for each person above 4 (linen cost presumably) - but still a fantastic deal.
