Airfare tickets to Zurich
Just booked our tickets to Europe for September on Swiss Airlines, they seem to be having a fair if anybody is flying somewhere they fly! Booked on vayama because they were $200 cheaper than anywhere else, which I have never used but hopefully they work out okay. Has anybody flown in Swiss economy? We are hoping it is an okay airline!
Got Kansas City to Zurich, 1 stop each way, for $750 per person. Every other city for the time we want is running over $1000.
Now we just have to plan our trip. We were originally going to fly into/out of Munich and weren't even considering Switzerland. Do people recommend staying in Zurich and doing daytrips from there, or is there a better city nearby to stay in?

We flew Swiss Airlines last September and will do so again. We had economy seats, and they were fine---- typical I would say. Not much room, but ok. We took the train from Zurich to Chur, spent the night there, then took the scenic train from Chur to Varenna. The Zurich airport is a very nice one and very easy to navigate. Enjoy!

Swiss is fine. Nothing special, but fine. Typical levels of comfort and professional, if not overly warm service.
As for cities nearby, I would agree with Luzern.
One word of caution, though is with regards to costs. Switzerland is very expensive, much more so than Germany. For a week long stay, the added food costs, alone, might be enough to eliminate a $300+ savings on airfare. Affordable lodging can also be in very short supply.

Lindy,
I have flown Swiss both Business Class and Economy. I was really dissapointed with the seating room in Economy for an International flight. The person in front of me leaned her seat back the entire trip and there was very little room and I am only 5 ft tall. I would suggest trying to get seating towards the front of the plane, it might be better. I was on a full flight booked last minute and was stuck in the rear of the plane.
Go to Luzern as other posters suggested. Much more lively. If you have more time, you might also want to catch a ride on the Bernina Express for a ride through the Alps.
Keep in mind almost everything is closed on Sundays in Zurich. It is expensive to dine there but there are brat stands (if you like that). There is even one near the lake where you can sit down with a Brat and a Beer. Much cheaper option for lunch and only option other than Mc Donalds on a Sunday afternoon. Also, take a look in the supermarkets (Migros and Coop), you can always grab a cheaper snack there. There is one on Bahonstrasse (sp) that has food stand outside that sell souvlakis, brats and other stuff.

Zurich is fine expensive super nice by the lake.
Usually bid www.betterbidding.com for the Marriott
Riverside there 5* paid $80/nt when there last
so there are deals to be had.
Hotel Otter ok if you do not want to bid otel.com Booking.com
www.luzern.org prettier still quite expensive.
might also consider going down to Locarno the cheapest area
and into the north of Italy in the lake country
even prettier and a bit cheaper
www.stresa.org Grand Hotel Dino a favorite of mine there
www.bellagio.info Hotel Florence
SwissAir ok not great lost my bags x 2 weeks once no apology
insuremytrip.com always wise.

Thanks for all the information. Luzern looks great!
I'm hoping to get seat reservations more towards the front but have heard you have to call them to pick your seats out so I will do that sometime soon.
