I am looking at flights to Paris in early december of this year. My dates are not negotiable. The fares that I am seeing are in the low to high 800s. When I went a couple of years ago, the fares were below 400! I know that prices can go up, so is it that I am looking too early or that fares have really increased that much?

I think the fares have really increased that much; I am paying $920 from PIT-CDG mid-October. Hard to believe, isn't it?

We have been semi looking at fares to Paris as well, as we are considering a short trip there over Thanksgiving. I am shocked at how expensive the flights have gotten! We went to Paris in November 2005 for about $320 per person. Now I didn't expect the prices to be that low, but we are seeing fares from CLT to CDG in the $800-$900 range. We have also checked into fares for other European cities (Rome, Prague, etc) and they were just as high. I think that airfare is just quite a bit higher in general.

We just bought an open jaw ticket for October, into Paris and out of Munich. We paid $797 each (incl. tax). Everyone said it would probably cost about $500, but we were expecting to pay around $600 due to higher fuel costs, but could never find anything close to that! So we just booked and said what the heck. I don't think those great fares are gone for good, but they are few and far between these days.

We paid $784.50 each total a couple of months ago on American Airlines Sept 17-Sept 30 XNA-DFW-CDG...FRA-DFW-XNA now they are over $940.00 each.

Where are you flying from? Last December it was $800 roundtrip L.A. - Paris on Air Tahiti Nui (tix bought on Priceline). That was the best we found, and I checked almost daily for months before we finally bought them.

This year, ATN already had a sale for $600+ for L.A. - Paris roundtripd during December.

Alas, this latest info about Lufthansa out of ATL just confirmed what we here in Pgh. already know about our situation; checked PIT-CDG on Luft. and got fare of over $1200. Almost makes my USAirways' $920 look good.

For last March trip to Paris, we paid $719, including all taxes. And that happens to be a cheap season to go. Yes, I remember fares under $400, but gone are the days. By the way, one way we did save was to book AA vacations, so that our very nice hotel for one week cost $1,050 for 2. By entering the web site through the Citibank credit card site, we saved 5%.

Check out other hotel and airfare discounters - especially if you don't mind 2 or 3 star places. We flew Delta and stayed in Montemarte area for a week last March for around $700 per person (www.europeandestinations.com)

wow, now I don't feel so bad about the $561 ticket I bought yesterday for Thanksgiving week (from NYC), even though it's more than what I used to pay from the west coast.

I know that everyone is complaining of prices versus a couple of yeaars ago - but to put it in some perspective - prices now are really no higher than theywere 15 or 20 years ago - given the rate fo inflation. In the 80's we routinely payed $600 RT to western europe in high season - for the lowest advance purchase fare staying at least X days, and saving $24 each day by not raveling out Fri/Sat or back Sat/Sun.

So - think of anything else that costs what it did 20 years ago.

Just a couple of weeks ago I bought a ticket for my mom from L.A.-Paris-L.A. for spring 2008. I had to do it early as my ticket is a frequent flyer award ticket and her ticket has to match the same flight schedule as mine. I couldn't gamble on waiting too long in case the seats fill up. I ended up having to dish out $1274. for an economy class ticket on United. I go to Paris almost annually and am used to paying around $850-$875. Happy Travels!
