Arles or Avignon or St Remy

Avignon is very central (assume you will have a car) and big enough to have plenty to choose from in terms of restaurants, etc. I was only in St. Remy for lunch and it looked liked it would pretty much close down at night. Worth going to but I don't think there would be much to do. You didn't mention Aix-en-Provence which I really loved. It's big enough but has lots of little corners to wander in.

Like Gretchen said, they are all, relatively, close to one another.

Personally, I'd pick St Remy. To me Avignon was too big and a little too obviously geared towards the tourist (not that there's anything wrong with that.)

St Remy, on the other hand, is smaller and seems more "natural." Plus, I found it to be quite a pleasant little village with some nice shops and restaurants. And the drive into town - that road lined with plane trees. Wow.

I'm in the camp of preferring Avignon as St Remy is too limited for me (obviously this depends on you and what you want to do in the town you stay in and your likes/dislikes) but still has a lot of tourists. However, I also think those are too close together to need to change towns. YOu must have a car if you are considering St Remy, so I really wouldn't move between them. If you want two centers in Provence, I'd choose another farther away so there'd be a reason or convenience for it. Aix is a possibility, or perhaps up near Vaison la Romaine or something. Last summer I moved within my 8-10 days within Provence; half the time I stayed in Aix and the other half in Pernes-les-Fontaines. It was a good choice, I enjoyed that. So, even though Pernes was a small podunk place, there aren't very many tourists there.
