Barcelona to Sevilla - train or air?

Any views? Am considering either night train or flight... How easy is it for a tourist to book air or train to travel within the country? Does AVE (Renfe) do the Barcelona-Sevilla connection? Or can I get a reasonably priced air fare - say under 200e? Please advise.... I will be travelling alone. I need to be well prepared!

There is no direct routes for Barcelona to Sevilla via the train, but there is air service, under 1-1/2 hours. The train goes through Madrid and connects to Sevilla, so, if you only want to get to Sevilla, then I'd suggest taking a plane for around 150 euros round trip.

Make sure to search all the airlines, not just Iberia. I flew Barcelona-Seville two weeks ago on Vueling and the fare was only 10 euros (once they add taxes and stuff it came out to 22 or so, but, still, who can argue with that). The cheap fares are usually on flights at non-peak hours though. The one I took left Barcelona at 6:45am.

Also, regarding booking: I just booked on their website while I was here in the US but probably could have done it just as easily in Spain as well. Was very easy to do. Booked flights for intra-spain travel as well on iberia's website with also no problem (to fly madrdi-barcelona, they had fares < 50 euros).

Try going to www.whichbudget.com and see what comes up for air fare.

If you are going to use a so-called "budget" air carrier I would not necessarily wait until the last minute to book a flight, provided you are certain of your dates, etc.

Often the fares rise as the actual flight date approaches. And I assume you already know about checked luggage weight restrictions for intra-European flights.

There are attractive prices on the direct overnight Hotel trains between Barcelona and Seville - as low as $69 per person including rail fare and place in a T6 - six-person couchette - $79 for a T4 - 4 person couchette; $102 per person in a double; $152 for a single - there are also Gran Clase Singles at $203 and Gran Clase doubles at $140 p.p. - note that Gran Clase singles and doulbes come with toilet, wash basin and shower in the compartment and breakfast and dinner are also included in the fare. These fares are thru RailEurope in US and it's my understanding that they may be cheaper than similar tickets available thru www.renfe.es - Spanish rail web site. Trains leave about 10pm and arrive in other city around 8am - direct, no changing. There are special prices for kids under 12 and railpass holders. RE charges a $15 per order booking fee - i always recommend calling BETS, a RE agent i've worked with for years and high recommend for competence and knowledge (800-441-2387) and they don't charge some of RE's mailing fees. So you save a night's hotel fees and arrive in the city center nice and early - i'd go by rail but some folks don't like night trains. It's a long haul in the day so i'd probably fly in day if price were comparable - day train fare is much higher than the lowest $69 on the night train.

We just flew Spanair on Barcelona-Sevilla route. Very pleased. Booked on Spanair website from US and 110% satisfied.

If memory serves me correctly, some "low-ish" fare flights, especially within a country (like... as on an airline such as Spanair) might not be listed on whichbudget.com

Worthwhile to check opodo.co.uk for air travel between any two points - - for comparison sake.

Best wishes,

Rex

Seems as though the $69 overnight train fare including sleeping berth will be cheaper than any airline - especially since you save a night's hotel fee and arrive in the city center.
