It's a lovely photo - in a few weeks time I hope to skating on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa - not quite the same - there are no windmills -but still a pleasure.

I just took the train from Amsterdam to Paris on the 10th, and it seemed like continual skating from Amsterdam to Antwerp. Every little town was full of families skating. It was lovely, and I wished I could have stopped and joined the fun.

My understanding is that temperatures used to be a lot colder several centuries ago, and skating on iced-over canals and ponds was a common winter pasttime. The ice-skating scenes could be seen in the paintings by Hendrick Avercamp.
