Keep in mind that if you do not use the pass, they let you return it for an 80% refund. So if you buy it now and the volcano interferes with plans, you will still get most of your money back.

and you can also use the pass anytime within six months of issuance - you have six months in which to activate the pass. After that it is possible to have the pass re-issued for a small fee - alternatives to refunding if you are postponing your trip
