Best way to go from Venezia S. Lucia to Venezia Mestre train station.

Wondering if anyone can provide details on how to best go from Santa Lucia train station to the Mestre train station in Venice. I wanted to see the possibility of traveling via Eurostar from Venice to Milan. Thanks in advance.

As the Mestre stop is the first one after Sta. Lucia, it only takes about 5-10 minutes. That aside, forget about Mestre because you get the Eurostar for Milan at St. Lucia anyway.

JJ, I found that the timetables and tickets for the trains leaving Venice sometimes indicate that the train leaves from Mestre. But all the trains leave from S. Lucia and stop in Mestre about 5-10 minutes later. In fact, our ticket said Mestre and the clerk reminded us that even though the ticket said Mestre, the train left from S. Lucia and we should be on the train about 15 min. before the actual time printed on the ticket, which was the time the train left Mestre and not S. Lucia. My husband and I wondered how many people inadvertently miss their train because they didn't know this. Hope this helps to answer your question.

Although most Venice-Milan trains leave from Santa Lucia, unless things have changed very recently the Eurostar does not stop at Santa Lucia, only at Mestre. If you want to take the Eurostar, just take any train from Santa Lucia to Mestre and then change.

To make certain that the Eurostar train originates in Venice Santa Lucia Station, check in www.trenitalia.com Type in "Venezia S. Lucia" as point of departure, "Milano Centrale" as point of arrival. If the Eurostar of your choice originates in Mestre, the schedule will show a connecting train from S. Lucia to Mestre. Otherwise, the departure time from S. Lucia will appear. If you click on the train number (in blue), you will see all intermediate stops. Remember, too that there are hourly Intercity trains from Santa Lucia to Milano Centrale. These are slightly less expensive, and are apt to be crowded, particularly in second class (seat reservations are not mandatory on IC trains, but recommended)
