Bicycle hire in Haarlem and best tulip field routes

We are checking in (leaving our bags) at Carlton Square on a Friday morning 28 April, and was planning to hire a bike for the day.

How much would the bicycle hire cost? I suppose the best place would be the train station. I read that it could be included in the cost of train ticket but I will be using a Eurailpass.

I'd like to see the tulip fields around the area. Apparently the nicest area is around Lisse to Sassenheim?

Also, could anyone recommend which routes to take? I think we'd do part train part cycling as I can only handle cycling around 10km at a time. Thanks!

The best and easiest way to see the tulipfields around Lisse/Hillegom will be to take the bus or rent a car. Also not all trains take bikes, you better check this.
Make a visit to Keukenhof near Lisse, best spot to see many flowers.

If you donot want to bike more then 10kms. per day, it is hardly worth to rent a bike. Haarlem is a city, you better walk there or take a bus.
Near the station there is a tourist office, where you can get lots of info.

A reminder, April. 29 will be the celebration of Queen's birthday.
You will see many festivities in various cities, lots of flee-markets etc., Most shops might be closed etc., schedules of trains/buses etc. will also be different.
Also expect many tourist in NL that weekend, as May 1 is a public holiday in Germany, Belgium etc.

Thanks Ida101!

I prefer not to rent a car as it's more expensive or take a bus as we'd like to stop as and when we like when a photograph opportunity arises.

You mentioned Hillegom which is on the Haarlem-Leiden train route. Would this be the suggested train stop to get around the Lisse tulip fields?

We prefer to see the tulip fields first and only go into Keukenhof if we haven't had enough by then

Yes I'm really excited about Queen's Day. I'll have to check about my Thalys train to Bruges when I get there.

Keukenhof is much more beautiful than the tulip fields. Don't miss it! It is acres of wonderful landscaped gardens with all different kinds of flowers.

The tulip fields around Lisse outside Keukenhof that we saw were just rectangular fields of one color of tulips that were just a little more interesting than a field of corn.

At Keukenhof you will see the best and largest collection in beautiful tulips, hyacinths and many other flowers.
The tulips in the fields etc. are grown not for the flower but for the bulb,so in the fields usually they take the flower off soon after getting into bloom.
Hillegom is indeed a staion where a few trains stop. However to get to Lisse (Keukenhof) you better take the bus Haarlem-Leiden, that makes stops near Keukenhof.

I am not sure of the exact cost of the bikes but I think it was 15E for half a day. Plus you had to give a deposit and maybe your passport. I thought it was reasonable - we rented them from the Harlem station. A few days later we had moved on to Switz where the cost of the renting bakes was much higher!
