book

This is completely off topic...but i need help. I always wander into Barnes & Noble/Borders and find books that are interesting and then forget the titles/authors.

There is one in particular that I have been searching for the past years. The book was about a young boy having to live with his eccentric aunt. I know it is a well-known book that was written in the 60s/70s perhaps.

Does anyone have any clue to the title/author?

In what country does it take place? Children's or adults' book? Any further hints as to its content? Fiction or memoir? (P.S. Are you sure it was a boy and that it didn't take place in the USA?)

An orphaned boy ( believed to be the author- Patrick Dennis) goes to live with his free-spirited aunt.

Curious-How could you search for years for a book that was a successful play and film?

Well, there are three children rather than just one boy but it might be The Growing Summer by
Noel Streatfeild. The children go to stay with an eccentric aunt in Ireland.
I think that the American distributors dumbed down the title to something like The Magic Summer.

Not so very young a boy but it might also be Travels with My Aunt by
Graham Greene

I think that book is much older. It was a movie even before the 60s.

Rosiland Russell played Auntie Mame and the title song, Mame, swept the country.

HI
just to clarify a little
the book by P Dennis was 'Auntie Mame' as was the non-musical film with
Ros. Russell
Then, it was turned into a Jerry Herman musical called 'Mame', with the hit song.
Then it was an awful imo musical film with Lucille Ball.
