Bringing wine back from Italy

Can anyone give suggestions on bringing wine back home (California) from Italy. How many bottles are you allowed? Is it just easier to ship them?

We shipped two cases of Chianti to California last April. It arrived before we go home!

It was completely hassle free. There are some duties you have to pay which increase the per bottle cost but to us well worth it!

We found that it would have cost almost $10 per bottle to ship. I packed bubble wrap and tape, which took up very little room. We brought back about 8-9 bottles.

We had a couple of cases shipped and I'm sure we paid a premium for doing so. Arrived several weeks after we got home. There was no way we could carry that much wine home and there was no guarantee we could find the same wine in the States. The memories we relive with each bottle justifies the added cost!! Dave

Hi april,

You can bring back a Litre or so of wine duty free. However, the tax is now so low, that Customs agents don't care about 6 bottles pp.

Just declare them.

Great! Now we know our options, depending on how much we purchase.

A "toast" to all of you!!
