Brittany suggested base and or accommodation?

Based on the helpful advice we have received in this forum, we have decided to limit our trip to next year just to France. We will land in Paris and then thought before going south to Bordeaux and the Loire and Dordogne, we would like to spend a few days in Brittany. Thinking about three or four days. We would ideally like to be right in a town so we can go for a walk after dinner; and if anyone knows of an accommodation that they would recommend, that would be wonderful. I know most gites require a week stay, but if we could get a fridge and coffee set up where we stay, it would be ideal. Thanks so much!

Brittany is much larger than a few days, so you will want just one location. I suggest Vannes. For more details, see my trip report:

I assume Stu Dudley will also chime in. He has written a wonderful guide for Brittany (and Normandy) as well as others for many parts of France.

AJ Peabody, thank you very much for your report I have just finished reading it and the comments that other posters made. What a lot of information there! From what I can tell, most people stayed in either hotels or bed and breakfasts. I will get in touch with Stu Dudley and see if i might impose on him for his report. We are not opposed at all to staying in lodging where we can’t necessarily cook for ourselves because we love dining out, but it gets to be a lot as the trip goes on. I was looking at staying in Vannes. Just to get a flavour of Brittany; definitely realize it will not be a thorough tour.

Last trip we stayed in Rennes. It suited our driving regime, coming from the north via Fougères, and we also made a day trip to Mont-Saint-Michel from there. It is quite a nice mid-sized city, but it is a city rather than a town (capital of Brittany I think). I don't know what you are looking for in lodgings, but we stayed at the Adagio, which is self-catering accommodation. It gave us a bedroom, a living room, obviously a bathroom and access to a washing machine. If you are looking for quaint accommodation this certainly isn't it, but it did give us the option of staying in some nights and the fun of shopping for groceries in French supermarkets. There are plenty of inexpensive places to eat in Rennes, a fantastic gelato shop, a covered market and a really good Galeries Lafayette (be there in July for the soldes). There is a historic centre in Rennes which has a number of half-timbered buildings, some of which are decaying badly, but overall the city is quite pleasing. I really enjoyed the market and would return there again.

Gites de France includes B&B stays, not just weekly rentals:

And you could try this site too:

Bed and breakfast, cottage and holiday rental in France

Vannes is a good location for seeing that part of the coast and also the interior:

I have said it before, so I will admit it again -- I am not a big fan of Brittany. But I know there must be something wrong with me, so I continue to go there from time to time anyway, hoping that I will change my mind.

I do have a trip to Brittany on my back burner, though, and that will be to Quiberon.
