I never stayed there but I passed it and it looked decent. The Campo dei Fiore is also a real colorful area to be in.I must say... I stayed at the Hotel Due Torri near Piazza Navona and it was excellent. Very Italian, great staff, modern plumbing and perfect location. Others on the Forum have also liked it. See my post ALL ABOUT ROME for more info. Here is a web sight which has a pic of the Due Torri on it.

http://www.hotelbook.com/static/welcome_14282.html

I wouldadvise faxing the hotel directly for the best rates, don't use Utell, their American agent. Rooms should run about 280,000 lire for a double. There are a few other small hotels in the area if you want more info, Email me. I also have a few pics of the Due Torri if you are interested.

Hope this helps!

Stephen,
We stayed at the Hotel Campo de Fiori last October and really enjoyed it. Our rooms on the first floor were very tiny but beautifully decorated with mirrors, great attention to detail and even a ceiling depicting a fresco of clouds and sky. The downside was the noise on weekends. Since the hotel has no airconditioning one hears the amazing partying (loud voices, rolling bottles & etc.) that goes on during the weekend...my husband decided to join them and had a good time...
The breakfast is very good, the staff is helpful and spirited and the view from the rooftop (must be in good shape) is fabulous!!
Our room last year was 200,000 Lire in October...
let me know if you have more questions!
Lisa

My wife and I stayed there in May for two nights. Stephen, this hotel has some very good things and very bad things. The best aspects of the hotel are the roof terrace and management. Just outstanding. Lisa touched on the worst aspects; the rooms are tiny and there is significant noise outside at night. What Lisa doesn't know is that the parties outside the hotel have now extended to every night (according to management). We stayed there on tuesday and wednesday nights and the young peope are outside in the small piazza to all hours of the night. I actually hate to comment negatively about the hotel because it was really nice and a great value. But we couldn't stay there again under the circumstances. I would recommend that you email them and discuss these concerns and to see if they have a recommendations (maybe the noise problem is gone for instance). Good luck.

Thanks Paul for what sounds like a realistic and honest opinion. Noise will be a problem for us as we will have our 6 month old son with us! Stephen

Stephen, for a more quiet location try accross the river in Trasteverde (sp). It appeared much more local than tourist and there could be a good value there. Maybe you should post a question about hotels there.

I'm not sure that Trastevere is necessarily the answer. It is more local than tourist, but it is also a big center of local nightlife. I stayed with friends there and loved it, but at night (especially on weekends) it's anything but quiet around the piazzas and streets that are the social centers.

I think that in Rome the secret to quietness is not only the neighborhood but the exact location, since some streets are quieter than others quite nearby. Since the non-local can't know which streets those are, if noise is a consideration my advice is 1) look at as many guidebooks as possible to see if they comment on the noise factor, 2) ask online for opinions (!!), 3) ask for a quiet room, which may mean a view of a back wall five feet away or may mean a nice courtyard view (and there's no guarantee that you'll actually get a quiet room), 4) bring earplugs (not very useful for the baby, though).

We stayed at the Campo dei Fiori for three nights in May. We had a room on the top floor (5th or 6th) and could walk outside our door to the terrace. 220,00 Lira. We had a great time there , the staff was great especially Edith at the front desk. It was noisy. The partyers go quite late and then the vendors start setting up very early in the morning. The noise didn't bother me or my wife until the last night when we had an a=early plane to catch. We stayed at another hotel near the Vatican for 4 nights when we arrived in Rome before we traveled around Italy and much preferred the area around the Campo dei Fiori. We felt that this square had probably been used 24 hrs. a day for several hundred years and that now we experienced part of that history.
By the way a store next to the hotel sells mephisto shoes.
