Can an American lose his citizenship by staying out of the country too long?

This is slightly off-subject but here is a situation where a parent tried to take away their child's US citizenship:
Years ago a friend of mine got divorced and his ex took their 2-year-old son to live in Argentina. (how she did this w/o his permission is another story) She then said she was changing his citizenship from American to Argentine. My friend was very distressed that his son might lose is US citizenship. I made a call on his behalf to the State Department to ask if it's possible to take away a child's US citizenship. The State Department told me that if the child was born in the US then he is a citizen until age 18 whether anyone likes it or not. Once he turns 18 he can renounce his citizenship if he wishes. But neither he nor his mother can renounce it before age 18.
This child is now a grown man still living happily in Argentina, but he never renounced his US citizenship.
