Sorry - you can simply order a large bottle of non-carbonated water in any cafe or restaurant (a family size) and it will be cold - but no ice.

Oh, thank you everybody! I'm taking notes, honestly! And it's true, I need to partake of the local fare, and I'm sure I will. I just need to have my comfort drink to help get me over the hump.
My sister and brother-in-law, who are from Texas, went to Switzerland during a heatwave. They went into a McD's for iced drinks. My brother-in-law's drink had 9 ice cubes in it, my sister's, 11. She didn't share. Do Lipton tea bags taste the same or do I need to pack a three-month supply of them, too? |
Lipton Yellow (found in Europe) is far superior to the Lipton tea in the US. Once you have it you'll want to bring lots back home.

I too am an ice tea addict. On a trip to London I asked for an ice tea in a nice restaurant and was informed that they didn't know how to make it. (This was at the end of the trip and I was REALLY craving my ice tea!!) So I asked for a pot of tea and a large glass of ice, and I proceeded to make my ice tea, while the wait staff stood by and watched. The waiter brought the requested items and then three of them stood behind me and watched as I poured the tea into the glass. Oh that tasted SO GOOD!!! A few minutes later we saw four waiters sipping glasses of ice tea-they had made their own. Lesson learned is that people, including me, can adapt and try new things --as well as snooty waiters.
Second comment-- on several recent trips I have taken Crystal Light ice tea packets to be added to ice cold bottled water that is available anywhere. The little packets are easy to carry, very light weight to pack and are a real lifesaver when it comes to having a little taste of home. Third comment--forget about large glasses of ice, it just doesn't happen in Europe. Large bottles of water, yes, large glasses with ice very very rarely. With the possible exception of Mc Donalds or Starbucks, etc where they might possibly be available. I generally try to avoid eating at any establishment that I can eat in at home. That goes for any trip we take, close to home or halfway around the world. |
