Capri-palace, caesar-augustus, la minerva, or hotel luna?

Hi again, Fodorites! My friend and I (the 2 single american girls...) are planning to stay in capri 1-2 nights later this month. We have narrowed it down to the above hotels - any preferences or advice? I've heard good things about all, but am curious about the locations, and whether 2 single girls might feel too surrounded by couples in any of these choices? We can fit any of 4 into our budgets, so we are willing to pay more for CP or CA if that's what's recommended. We want to be able to have fun, and to relax, and to easily get to town. Appreciate any advice!

By the way, I've stayed at La Minerva and it was very clean, reasonable rates, panoramic views, and was a relatively short walk along the main shopping street to la piazetta. Luigi Esposito is the owner, and he was a very nice chap.............good luck.

Hi: thanks for your replies! I will definitely check out the websites you recommend. Why do you say to stay in Capri vs. Anacapri? Is Capri livelier? Appreciate your advice...thanks!

I would also choose to stay in Capri over Anacapri (but be sure and go there). There's more to do in Capri as far as dining, bars, shopping, people watching etc.

Definitely more to do in Capri...you can go to aAacapri for a visit-see the Villa San Michele, and take the chair- lift ride to the top of the island....you can see the entire Sorrentine peninsula from up there. By staying in Capri, there are more swanky shops (along the via camerelle), nice walks (via pizzolungo), clubs (anema e core), restaurants (be sure to eat at la fontelina by the faraglioni rocks after suntanning and swimming!), etc. etc.

happymz,

We stayed at Hotel Luna last July.
We had very beautiful rooms overlooking the coast, and really enjoyed the spectacular pool. The hotel is within a five minute walk of the main piazzetta, restaurants, shops, etc.

Guests were families like ourselves and other couples, but you're probably going to find this true at nearly any hotel you choose in Capri, since Capri is a major tourist destination.

A note of caution: If you decide to book at Luna, make sure to request either water view or garden view rooms. Some of the other rooms face an interior courtyard!

Good luck, and have a wonderful time!

I also stayed at La Luna and it was perfect. They have a really large patio outside that overlooks the water and rocks which is breathtaking. I went with my 26 year old son and 28 year old daughter and they loved it too. The room, the food, the flowers, the view . . . ahhhhh beautiful

While most of the posters are recommending Capri over Anacapri, I want you to know about the Caesar Augustus. I spent two nights at this hotel in 2002. It was a delightful experience.

First of all, the view is superb. My room was spacious and clean. It looked out over the terrace with large windows and a small balcony.

I ate lunch there one day after hiking up from Capri and it was one helluva a meal--one I will never forget. The food was simply prepared but the ingredients were fresh and seasonsed just right. The caprese and eggplant parmagina were out of this world. By the time the last hikers arrived, the food was almost gone! Everyone in our group devoured the food. Yes, hiking made us hungry but I am able to compare the food at the Caesar to other restaurants after hiking and they match up to the Caesar.

This hotel is a slam dunk and you will not be disappointed.

Enjoy your trip.

Okay, now you have me torn! Based upon your advice to look at Capri, I thought perhaps we would go with Punta Tragara...but now I've read it's a quite a walk from town. We want more of an upscale hotel/ resort, ideally close to town AND with a great view...and while Punta Tragara and Caesar-Augustus are at the upper limit of our price range, Quisisana is a bit beyond it. So, is it better to stay at C-A and be a short walk from Anacapri, or stay at PT and be a long walk from Capri? As you can tell, I'm struggling with indecisiveness, and we leave Wednesday - any help is appreciated!

Im my opinion, as stated earlier, there is a lot more action in Capri versus Anacapri. That said, Punta Tragara is only a 10-15 minute walk down the lovely Via Tragara to town center. If you would like something halfway between Punta Tragara and town center, have you tried Casa Morgana or La Scalintella for vacancies??

Hi: I checked out Casa Morgano on your recommendation, but I think we're looking for more of a resort/hotel...something bigger, with its own restaurant and bar, perhaps a gym or spa. The problem seems to be finding a nice place with a great view, great facilities, close to town location, and in our price range! Oh well, we will just have to make our choice. Thanks for your help!

Darling, you aren't staying at Quisisana? Too bad. Luna is very beautiful--lovely garden, bright tile, gorgeous pool. Their "staff" is extremely rude, however.

I had lunch there with a group of friends, one of whom is the director of a major bank in Singapore. Our waiter was so rude to him because he was Asian and in a t-shirt. It was almost laughable because this man could afford to buy Luna, tear it down, and push it into the sea. Later, another waiter insinuated that we tried to leave without paying our bill when we got up to look at the pool. Then, to top it off, the pool attendant wanted money from me because I sat on a "rental" beach chair to tie my shoelaces.

Thanks everyone - based upon everyone's feedback, and our own thoughts on what we want out of our Capri holiday - we've decided to go with a sea-view room at the Caesar-Augustus after all. It's been booked, and I promise to post our experiences when we get back! Ciao for now...we leave tomorrow!

Hi, I have exactly the same dilema as you had ! 2 of us are trying to choose between the Minerva sea view room or Caesar augustus garden view in anacapri. We love to people watch but also like to be away from the crowds and feel that we are 'part of the local scene'. Caesar has amazing views and a pool so has the edge, but as you stayed there i was hoping you could tell me whether you made the right choice staying at CA or whether anacapri was abit dead?

Hi cjendean: First let me say that I don't think you can go wrong with the Caesar-Augustus, though I would definitely recommend a sea view room if you can stretch your budget for it. I wish now that I had checked out La Minerva while I was there, but didn't get a chance, so I still can't really compare. But here's what I can say about the Caesar-Augustus.

This hotel is beautiful and elegant, but we did not find it to be at all pretentious. It's location is somewhat secluded in Anacapri - it's about 5 minutes from the square - so there's not alot of people-watching to do from the hotel itself, unless you just want to check out other guests! It literally sits at the edge of a cliff, with amazing views across the bay of Naples, and from one edge of the terrace, you can see down over Capri town. The staff is wonderful - definitely make you feel at home. We especially loved the hosts at the hotel restaurant! And the pool is really amazing. The garden view rooms looked similar in size and amenities as the sea view rooms, but again, the sea view is just unbelieveable, so if you can fit it in your budget, I would highly recommend it.

As for location, if you can picture Capri as a two-level island, Capri town sits on the lower level and Anacapri sits on the upper level, and they are connected by a cliff-side road that winds up the hillside. The hotel sits just off the top of the hillside road, as you approach Anacapri. The hotel provides complimentary shuttle transportation to Capri between 8-8, so that's one way to get to/from, but the public bus is also an easy option that we used several times. It picks up right outside the hotel, and can take you to Marina Grande or Capri town, or even Anacapri if you aren't in the mood for a short walk. You can also walk to the Marina Grande from nearby the hotel - you can catch the Scala Fenicia (900 ancient steps) across the street for some more breathtaking views.

As for staying in Anacapri vs. Capri, that's a tough call, but we preferred Anacapri. Capri town was almost too polished for our taste (and my friend lives in Manhattan! maybe that was why....after all, we were in Italy!) - and most shops seemed to be designer boutiques (e.g. Gucci, D&G, etc.) vs. one-of-a-kind shops. We found more of the latter in Anacapri. Anacapri during the day does get very busy with tourists, etc. But at evening, calms down considerably. Note that I can't say for certain how it is in summer, since we were there in late April. There are a few restaurants and clubs, and a few of the hotels (Caesar-Augustus included) have great bar/ lounges in them. And we did manage to find a nightclub for late-night dancing and drinks that was quite hopping, even if it was late April!

Anyway, I hope this information helps you a bit - I really wish I had stopped at La Minerva in person to compare! But I have heard nothing but good things about that hotel too. I think we ultimately chose the C-A because we wanted a hotel with more of a destination onto itself/ resort feel, with pool, restaurant, bar, etc. and we definitely are pleased with our choice!

I also posted a trip report on my stay - see 'long trip report on too short trip to sorrento/ capri' - it may help you a bit too. Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Good luck!
