car rental in Budapest
Hi everyone. My DH and I are leaving in a few weeks for a week in the countryside of Hungary before arriving in Budapest for a week.
We are having trouble contacting independent car rental agencies in Budapest to inquire about cars with automatic transmissions. All I find seem to offer manual only.
Does anyone have any suggestions or names and/or websites of independent agencies we could contact? The US chains are really expensive! Thanks a lot.

Hi
We've rented a car in Budapest several yrs ago. We usually call autoeurope. They're a wholesaler. We've been satisfied and able to get an automatic whenever we've wanted, except once in Vienna. There's a couple of other companies also, Kemwel is one. I can only tell you about the one we always use. We also rented from the airport because it was convenient to pick up and drop off. If youre' traveling check out Pecs, Eger.

Thanks everyone..
I found Fox Auto Rentals and are renting through them. Their service has been prompt and professional in the arrangements. Price also acceptable. Will let you know how it works out when we return.

pcooper, it might be too late, but if you click on my name you'll see a trip report and you can get details from that. Here is an excerpt. Note that the price is a little more than normal because we wanted to drive into Romania.
Renting a car is very, very expensive in Hungary. Even more so if you want to drive to Romania (if you can find a company that will allow it). We ended up going with an independent – Steve’s Rent a Car. It cost about $700 for 12 days and we were met at the airport and dropped the car off there. If we had paid in cash, it would have been about $560. Steve (really Istvan and, really really his son who spoke English) had a Hungarian motorway sticker on the car for us (see below). The company was very professional and, really, less of a hassle than a “normal” company. I would definitely use them again.

If it is not too late have a look at these options, there are some automatic ones on the list:

I looked at the web site coolman suggested and the prices were about the same as what I found. Avis (800-331-1212) was $883 US dollars for an intermediate size automatic for 9 days. Budget (800-527-0700) was $756 US dollars for the same. We need an intermediate or mid size 4 door because we will have 4 adults traveling. Avis & Budget quoted prices in US dollars and Alamo & Hertz quoted in Euros. Hope this helps.
This web site also had a lot of good information about ATMs, credit cards, etc. We will be traveling to visit long lost relatives in Hungary & Slovakia the end of August.
I certainly hope the heat wave (90-100) is over by then because most places don't have A/C!
